The lure of monotheism seems to be its simplicity. Gods who competed and had adventures seemed petty and human next to a single god with ultimate power. And they each had specialties, which was good if you were interested in only one or two things, but hardly one-stop shopping for divine favors.

Of course, an omniscient, omnipotent god can be boring. What can you talk about? There's no way to impress or fool with this deity. Anything you ask for sounds stupid and selfish. Some people might prefer a limited, independent god who can wheel and deal rather than a ubiquitous Wal-Mart god who offers the same deal to everybody.

Anything is possible, although polytheism has been discredited in Western culture for over 1600 years. It took 300 years for Chritianity to triumph in the Roman Empire, and I don't see a huge movement to change right now. People like the simplicity of knowing one single god's strengths and weaknesses (all, none) and the simplified backstory.

Incidentally, "god" is capitalized only when you're using it as a proper noun, a name. Ra is a god, Zeus is a god. God is the god, etc.

There were some who believed in gods other than the one and only one true God, the Creator and the Cherisher of all creations, the Most Merciful and the Most Compassionate. The other made-up gods had to disappear eventually with more knowledge. More personal knowledge and the search for truth by individuals will keep on leading to understanding of God and the shedding off of the beliefs that do not make sense to them but are maintained by hierarchical religious organizations. It is already happening because people now believe that they have the right and duty to search for the truth for their own peace of mind.
It may happen in US in other forms of god(s) such as worshipping the destructive war devices invented for the ease of annihilation of humanity.

Yes there are gods that are no longer believed in. Yes it could happen in the U.S. there are so many new religions. I'm sure there is some odd obscure religion that was believed by the people that came here in the 1700"s that is no longer believed. From the sounds of it you probably would have also loved Aphrodite.

They were cool Gods, but truth will always out way fiction. Even in their times, Ra and Zeus were only followed by the simple minded and stupid. The upper classes used the "gods" to control the masses. The U.S. is not controlled by religion nor does it use religion to control its citizens. If this were true, only one religion would be allowed.

What do you mean they "were" pretty cool gods? There are still those that honor the "old Gods".

Look up Ellinais, a religious group who recently got the go ahead from the Greek government to practice their belief in the 12 ancient Gods of Greece (which had previously been illegal).

Also look up "Kemetic Orthodoxy" for information on reconstruction of ancient Egyptian faith.

Conquest of Nations leads to the importation of the victors God. Look at the North and South American Indians.

No, Ra and Zeus were not Gods. They were a myth a fairy tale. There is only ONE God. The Father of our spirits & our elder brother Jesus Christs' Father. That is it just ONE

It happened because those societies either moved on to new ideas or were conquered by nations with different ones.
Also, religions tend to copy each other, so fear not- Zeus is not gone. He's been absorbed into the Christian god (so has Chronos).

You could say that they beleived in false gods because they didnt know any better and that they needed to beleive in something, it was thier way of explaining things they couldnt understand...kinda like us........except that we have something to base our views on or at least we think we do.

They needed something to explain the strange weather patterns in ancient times, so they invented Gods to pray to. I think that Mithras was very cool.
