I have a 3 year old beagle with bad breath. I have taken him to get his teeth cleaned at the vets (which cost alot) But is there anything else I can do other than take him to the vet?

...Prescription Diet® t/d® Canine dog food is formulated specifically for the nutritional management of dogs with dental disease. It's special fiber matrix scrubs the exposed tooth surface like an edible toothbrush, reducing bacteria-laden plaque. If left unchecked, this buildup can lead to gingivitis, a dental condition that can weaken the gums and tissues that support the teeth. You can buy from pet shops, treats and chews that are especially for bad breath. Also, what you feed your dog may have an influence on his breath. My mums dogs have terrible bad breath, but one of them was really ill and has to eat specialised food. As soon as the diet was changed years ago they both got really bad breath. They tried toothpaste etc but it isnt a long term solution if its the food thats causing it. You could try changing the food first. See how it goes.

I actually bought mine some doggie breath mints. He just gets the occasional doggie breath, and he loves when I put a couple mints in his Kong toy, or flip a couple on the carpet and he has to find them. I think I got them at PetSmart, came in a little blue can about the size of a fish food can, and look like Certs human mints, and smell nice and minty. I don't recommend those things they call "Greenies". I have heard about dogs having serious digestive problems as a result of eating them, and I gave one to my dog one time, and believe me, I found out where the stink goes. His poo never stunk so bad as it did when he passed that Greenie thing. Yikes.

Brush his teeth regularly and he likely won't need his teeth cleaned for years. Also, what kind of food are you feeding him? It's pretty unusual for a beagle this age to need his teeth cleaned. Give him lots of things to chew on as well.

they make doggy tooth brushes and toothpaste. maybe that would help, if your dog will let you that is. my dog REALLY didn't like the "beef" flavored toothpaste and wouldn't let me near him with it, but the little set was only 3 or 4 dollars at walmart so even if it doesn't work with your pup it might be worth a try! if you could get in a daily brushing i bet his breath would be much better!
