When your puppy does his business outside say good dog. Give the puppy a treat afterwards and this will reinforce the idea that going outside is good. Cage train the puppy, by putting the puppy in a cage. The puppy at first will go in the cage, but will learn that he will have to stay in the cage with his business if he doesn't hold it. When the puppy goes inside, if you see it say bad dog, but if you don't do not scold the puppy. The puppy will not know what he did wrong.

Put a body harness on your dog and a 5-6 foot long leash. Whenever the dog is inside and not crated than tie the leash to your belt..so you will be constantly seeing the dog. When you see it start to search/circle/signal otherwise that it needs to go, walk the dog immediately outside to an appriopriate potty area. Make sure you use your chosen command word, give plenty of praise and treat when completed (make sure you have treats in your pocket, don't delay with rewarding the dog). Do this until your dog is consistently trying to drag you to the door to show you that it neds to go outside. Also, remember a puppy can on average only hold their bladder/bowel as many hours as they are months old til their 8 months or so old...so watch the clock too.

Make sure you've cleaned the inside of the house of all priors accidents, this means not just getting rid of the visible stains but of the enzymes..use a good cleaner rated for cleaning biological stains and odors... I use Orange TKO (it's great for anything in the house [laundry, bedding, general cleaning] and safe for pets) or Nature's Miracle...make sure you buy the dog formula

Well, some dogs definitely catch on quicker than others. My dachshund took awhile to train, but after awhile he got the hang of it. You really need to be around your pup during the early weeks of its life and be there to take it outdoors when neccesary. Watch your dogs behavior and you will notice the dog will start to sniff around when it needs to do its business. When you notice this, immediately take your pup outside. They may not go the first time and will probably attempt to come back into the house and go in there, so pay attention to the behavior and whether or not they go when they are outside. Like I said, you might wait outside for 10 minutes or more and still have nothing. Just repeat this process over and over. If they attempt to go in the house after bringing them in, immediately take him outdoors again. It really is quite a process in the beginning, but he will definitely catch on. Praise him and reward him with treats when he goes so that he will know that this is a good thing. Oh and use a certain word like "outside" when he attempts to go in the house. He will catch on quickly if you do it this way. Like I say to everyone, I highly suggest crate training your dog as well. They generally won't go to the bathroom in there and find this as "their" area. Just remember to take him out right before you go to bed and immediately upon waking up. Put toys and treats in there to get him to want to be in there and don't force him into the kennel. Leave the door open and let him get used to it. Good luck.

Housebreaking your puppy is no different to any other training methods.

You need to show him that the right place to do the business is not inside the house. You should always use rewards and not punishment to train your pup. Rewards can be treats or praise.

Well, if he starts to go inside, grab him, ( i would face him away or you'll get peed on.) and then take him outside ASAP. he'll learn pretty quick that he should go outside. ALWAYS tell him he's a good dog and pet him when he goes outside, and scold him when he goes inside. You should take him outside to play often, that way he has a chance to go outside.
