I am assuming that you want to become a pro timekeeper? If so, check with the pro boxing commission in Illinois and find out what their requirements are. Most state pro associations want their officials to have amateur experience. If this is the case with Illinois, please email me at mel@amateurboxing.com and I'll give you an amateur contact in Chicago.

Your best bet is to hang out at your local boxing gym, and keep time for sparring sessions. I went to college with a guy who got started that way. He went on to work a few Atlantic City details, but quit after he got married. It's just like anything else, you start atthe bottom, work your way through small gyms and venues, and maybe one day you'll get the call to work something big.

You gotta love the sport though, as there's not much money to be made keeping time. It does however get you close to the action.

You have to have personality now though, due to computerized time-keeping systems. Most people find it more economical to use machines instead of people.

Keep working your contacts, and let your personality shine through!
