Most people don't want to have to think for themselves and take comfort from being spoon fed what and what not they should belive in. Throw in the promise of eternal life and you've got yourself a whole throng of sheep happily willing to follow you wherever you see fit to lead them, even straight into a slaughterhouse.

Well.....it really comes down to this....either there is a God, or there is no God. It's one or the other. Let's look at the Atheist point of view first.
If there is no God, then we are all here by some dramatic, cosmological accident. It's an accident that would be very difficult to happen just by the sheer odds of it alone. Then there's the evolution, and we are the supposed final product for now.
So if we're just an accident, then we should'nt have to worry about consequences after we die, for there is nothing after death. Why practice morals? We should just take everything we can get, stepping on everyone else, so as to make our lives more comfortable. We're all going to the same place, no? In fact, why should we let live those that are starving, have deformities, handicaps, etc. There lives are hard enough as it is, so why not just end it for them. In fact, if the whole planet exploded, would the universe miss us? There would be no more suffering again.
You see now why people want to believe that there must be more to it than just living and dying. To believe in a deity, gives us some kind of hope that there is more than just living and misery. There's also hope for justice against those that have wronged us and got away with it. There is hope that after death, perhaps there is some form of a better life later. These are the reasons why the majority of people on Earth believe in some kind of God.

Because God created us and he wants all of us to have "real life." The life we have right now are not "the real life" that Jehovah God intended for us. Sure, many people would argue that they are living real life because they have big houses, brand new cars, etc... and still have lots of money in the bank. Fairy enough?
Well, doesn't matter what material things you have, it's not going to prolong your life. When you grow old and die, you are nothing, you can't enjoy your wealth or get to spend time with your families and friends. The "real life" begans when Jehovah God brought deaths to nothing. That's why people believe in God. Jehovah promised mankind in Revelation 21:3,4, what He will do for us in the future. God can not lie, what He says will prove to be.
Revelation 21:3,4 says: 3 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
Isaiah 55:10,11 says: 10 For just as the pouring rain descends, and the snow, from the heavens and does not return to that place, unless it actually saturates the earth and makes it produce and sprout, and seed is actually given to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so my word that goes forth from my mouth will prove to be. It will not return to me without results, but it will certainly do that in which I have delighted, and it will have certain success in that for which I have sent it

Why NOT?
Personally I know God exists, but I am curious how you know he does not?
The Bahai Faith teaches us we need to have independent investigation of the truth.
What does that mean, Well it means we need to investigate the truth for our selves, read all the writtings, like our own private investigators,
Don't take some one elses word for it.
Read the material , All of it. And make a personal Choice.

lots of different reasons. For some it's a need to think there's some grand plan out there and someone running things. For some it's the need for support that they aren't getting in their lives. For some it's because they are brainwashed cows following the herd.
There are more reasons out there than anyone could even conceive of.

Creative, answer for the answer-less, conquer that which man cannot conquer (death), justice/mercy for the unjust and merciless people/events in this life. With all these great reasons, why wouldn't anyone believe in God?

Here is an answer as far as why I believe in God.
I've found the Lord and he is mine.
He won me by His love.
I'll serve all my years of time.
and dwell with him above.
I've tried the road of sin and found,
It's prospects all deceive.
I've proved the Lord,
and joys are mine;
More than *I could believe.
His yoke is easy his burden is light.
I've found it so.
I've found it so.
His service is my sweetest delight.
His blessings ever flow.
