In general, you don't give thank you cards for bonuses.
If it is part of a bonus program that "everyone" gets, you don't give a thank you card. If it is an "earned" bonus, you also don't need to give a thank you card. If it is something the boss gave out of the generosity of his/her heart (went out of their way to get it for you), then a thank you card is a good idea.
A simple verbal "thank you" is always sufficient.

Ok.... I didnt read all of the other answers.... but in my opinion, it kind of all depends on what kind of company that you work for if you give a bonus. I work for a gymnastics gym and we have only 20-30 employees, I work directly under the owner of the gym everyday. I got a 75 dollar visa gift card for my bonus. It is not a lot, but since I am only part time.... it is more than I make in a day sometimes. I will wirte a not directly to the owner since i know they are the ones that gave me the bonus. But if you work for a big business... where you dont see the owner all the time... i would say it is not necessary since your boss didnt shell out the money for it. I worked for several places where I didnt get even a dime of a bonus... and they were big companies... so you know they could have afforded one. I mean you COULD write one even if you dont see the owner... it would not hurt. A bonus is just that... a bonus. They dont have to give you one, or else it would be in the employee handbook as a benefit. I have never haggled a job offer for a larger christmas bonus. So I disagree that it is an earned thing that is part of your salary, though your boss can write it off as such and it does get tacked on to your paid wages and taxed when you get it. The truth is they could give everyone in the company a bonus except for you and you could do nothing about it. So it is a gift no matter what way you look at it. Do what you think is right.

As a boss - I did not receive a thank you note, my employee thanked me in person. This is enough, but if you feel you want to write a note I don't think it is a bad thing. I only give bonuses if they are deserved - I do not give all employees one. Therefore a note would just reiterate the fact that they know this and are grateful. However in a company where everyone gets a yearly bonus I would say absolutely no to a note - looks like you are sucking up. It is basically your salary and you are not getting any special treatment.

My husband owns his own company and is very hurt when his employees don't recognize his generosity at giving a bonus.

In his company, the Christmas bonus is a gift. Nowhere in the policy manual does it say that he has to give them a bonus. Yes, the bonus is based on the fact that the company did well, but it's not really even based on an individual's performance; all employees got the same amount.

After three years in a row of not one employee even remotely recognizing that the bonus was received (let alone gratitude for it), he is no longer giving them out.

Therefore, I make sure I say something to my boss when I receive my bonus! I certainly don't want to get it taken away.

Yes, most definitely! The size of the bonus should not determine giving your boss a card or not. The simple fact is that your boss did something that they didn't have to. I recommend that you purchase a blank card. Therefore, you can fill it in yourself. This would be the best method because it will say all the things that you feel without it being to cliche and misleading. It should not be a typical "thank you" card because those are not made for bosses. Just simply write inside that you want to thank your boss for recognizing and better compo-sating you for the hard work in which you do. And also for all the great assets that you job brings out of you! It will also make you a shoein the next time your boss gives bonuses.

Do you give your boss a thank you note for the bonus he gave you for Christmas?

I would love to have to give my boss a thank you note for a generous bonus at Christmas, unfortunately he doesn't give a Christmas bonus. But I am getting a 12% contribution from him into my retirement fund so i will give him a thank u for thank. Comes out to more that 8 grand and that's pretty generous!

If the taxes were taken out of the bonus, then I would just say a verbal thank you and leave it at that.

If it was a cash or non-taxed bonus, then I would write a card as it obviously came out of someones personal pocket and not the company coffers.

And BethAnn07 makes an excellent point that if employees don't show some appreciation for a bonus (which by definition is not part of regular pay) it could dissapear alltogether...

Congratulations and Happy New Year!

A big NO, not for the sole purpose of the bonus. You can thank the boss verbally for the bonus.

Bonuses are given to all employees, its not something he did especially for you. Its kind of like an office given gift.

If he gives out special gifts above and beyond, then a thank you is in order.

Depends on the situation. In a larger workplace where the bonuses are determined at a corporate level and your boss is only the person giving you the good news, you don't give a thank you note.

I work in a medium sized place where a lot of people get bonuses and my boss has input into "selling" me to upper management for the bonus. I thanked him in person.

In a small family run place, a thank you note would be very appropriate.

While it's not required, if you appreciate your boss and the bonus a simple thank you note is fine. You don't have to tell co-workers or friends that your sending it.

I always send my boss and co- workers holiday cards. And I tend to personalize them. Acknowledging something they did that made my day. Paying forward a sincere compliament.even to a boss is no big deal. I've found that it can brighten a rotten day for them. Because the bottom line is they are human beings.

Do what is comfortable for you.

My college student children sent their professors, staff and upper classmen students who have been really helpful in making their transition to college easier a Christmas card.
