It helps to align the spine and allows for proper blood flow without constriction sometimes caused by subluxations. It allows nerve signals to work in a more efficient manner and helps the body to heal itself from illness more quickly.

The first two answers posted mentioning "scam" and "like a doctor" are worthless opinions.
Just to make thing clear for those who have never been to a chiropractor or have heard rumors or propoganda, chiropractors do NOT treat bacterial, viral, or fungal conditions, cancer, or endocrine disorders (among other things).
What chiropractors treat and treat well...musculoskeletal conditions.
When joints are fixated or subluxated, they lose mobility. This lack of mobility does not activate the proprioceptive signals to the brain and the brain thinks the joint is not being used. It will lead to premature joint generation which will lead to more loss of mobility. Have you ever seen a person in a wheel chair or have an an arm in a sling and swath? Observe the decreased bone density in their legs and arms respectively. Do you want that happening in your spine or any joint in your body? If not, keep your joints moving.
Since a lobbyist for the AMA is here, allow me to give a little info about that organization.
About the American Medical Association...
A lawsuit was filed against them (and won) in the late 1900s for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act by boycotting the chiropractic profession. It was part of the AMA Committee on Quackery to "contain and eliminate" chiroipractic as a profession by making it unethical for an MD to refer to, accept a referral from, or otherwise socialize professionally with a chiropractor.
Read the links below and ask yourself why anyone would lobby for a profession that is the leading cause of death (beating out cancer, cardiovascular disease, war...), close to 800,000 deaths a year! The same profession that frequently recommends non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to patients that only mask the pain and not treat the root cause, while knowing that NSAIDs kill 7,000 people annually. There have been great breakthroughs in the medical profession like eliminating small pox, but most of the profession doesn't have a clue and end up experimenting on YOUR body with drugs.

i go get a chiropractic adjustment twice a week.
When you first go to a chiropractic office, they scan ur spine, and vertabrae. They look for crooked, or out of place bones, and subluxations. The next week (or just a few days later) you go back and get whats called an adjustment. the chiropractor adjusts (a fancy word for "cracks") which ever bone may be out of place, and it feels good.after that you feel better and looser and u can go about ur life easier. for example, for me, it is easier to play basketball after an adjustment since im not stiff and im loose. If you feel any stiffness in ur spine I highly recommend you go see a chiropractor. Good Luck!

A chiropractor "realigns" the spinal column in order for your spinal cord to remain open for an easy flow of communication.
With curved spines, herniated discs, etc, the spine will pinch and close off nerves in the column which are needed for communication to your brain. A straighter spine will eliminate pinched nerves and allow communication to function properly and the end results are a much healthier body.

if there's one thing worse than the lies of ignorant medical whores and others slandering chiropractic, it's some wet behind the ears "chiropractoid" lying and saying chiropractic is merely a "musculoskeletal" therapy, which is absolute stupidity on it's face. since when is the nervous system's control restricted to only the muscles? i understand they may have been taught this nonsense in an institution which supposedly teaches chiropractic, but it is a lie and ensures that they have no hope of achieving the true purpose of chiropractic, the correction of the cause of nerve interference.

well for people with bad backs (or just about bad any thing else) they can do wonders!
whille there popping your joints they are loosening knots (sore spots wich always hurt) they also are releaving temperary pain! if you only go once you will feel better for up to a week but if you go often theese "knots" will go away and you wont be in such horrific pain. i know some people that go 2-3 times a week! but if you need to go ask friends and family if they know of any one or possibly look in the phone book!
good luck!
