Is "blackeye peas" or "blackeyed peas" correct, and why?

The canned version always reads "Blackeye Peas", yet I hear people say "blackeyed peas" all the time. Are folks confusing the beans we eat for good luck on New Year's Day with the pop group? Both versions yield results on cooking websites. There seems to currently be no preference.
