Lincoln was probably the closest to an atheist, followed by Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. All were born into Christian families, then didn't attend.

As for when the next potential president comes around, it will probably happen after the Christian Right is unmasked as closet Racists and Nazi Sympathisers.

Not in a country that's full of superstitious rednecks. And anyway, who cares? The political office is just an illusion of power. The capitalists are the ones who run everything.

And anyway, Thomas Jefferson was an atheist, so yes, there all ready has been one.

I wish but if they come right out and admit it the self-professed "tolerant and loving" christians wouldn't vote for him/her. Even if it was the best option for the country, many religious people would blindly vote for the person that is the same religion as them because that's they way they have been taught and what they will teach to their children.

No way. Not in the next fifty years, at least. An atheist Presidential candidate wouldn't even make it out of the primaries in this country -- not in this society we currently live in. Hopefully that'll change in the future, but I can't even guarantee it'll be in our lifetimes.

The way things are, not for a very long time. For now, anyone with presidential aspirations need to at least pretend to be religious. For the easiest campaign, be rich, white, male, and protestant.

Clinton, Grant, Jeferson, possably others... I believe all have made some show of acknowleging God... but that don't make it so... they are politicians after all and know how to act... they have to, to get that high in the corrupt orginization that controls this country.

They'll be a black lesbian president before they elect an atheist.

I expect many past presidents are deistic, pantheistic or even atheistic but hide it because of their electorate.

There already have been and will again. Unfortunately they have to hide it to get elected. There have been at least two gay presidents.

I wish.... I think there would be less conflict. definitely, and the country would really change its motives for the good. However, I doubt that will happen. Most of america is christian, and most of america just votes for things like them, not what actually is best for the country...

I'm not so sure we haven't already. I truly question Bill Clinton's belief in any higher power...other than maybe Hilary.
