Please help me with this! How would you react if you were this girl?

I told a good friend of many years that I could see myself with a girl like her. She had seemed interested in me, but we decided to stay friends. Our friendship almost grew into romance, but she kept saying she did not like me. I backed off a bit, and she started acting differently and seemed hurt by me, so I sent her an email to tell her that I like her a lot but am confused. Should I have sent the email? How may she react?
