Go to the VA website. They now have it where you can request the DD214 online. You will have to print a form, sign it, and send it in to the specific address for your branch of service. The nice thing about this is that they begin processing it right away, but won't send it until they receive the signed form.
Also, once you receive the copy, take it to your county clerk's office. They will be able to put it on file in the county. If you lose it, or it is destroyed. you will simply have to go to that clerk's office, and they will be able to give you another copy.

You were supposed to register your DD214 at your local county or city courthouse, like it says to do. They keep an official notarized copy, and you can go to the courthouse and get however many copies you wish. If you followed instructions, you wouldn't be having this problem.

Depending on when you left active duty you should have been required to file your DD214 with your county clerk of your hometown - I know I did - and that was in 1987. If you did, that's the easiest place (and fastest). If not, try the web-site for HRC.

To obtain a copy of your military record, please visit the web site for the Military Personnel Records Center (MPRC) in St. Louis, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration:
This site gives instructions to submit a SF 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records.
The MPRC also offers a new on-line document request service. You can request your DD 214 through this web site:

Try the VA or maybe a local recruiter. I think they can get them.
