Natural peanut butter which does not have preservatives in it states on the jar to refrigerate. Peanut oil could become rancid unless the peanut butter is used up very quickly. If it is too firm, put it in the microwave for less than a minute and it will be easier to spread. Be sure all the foil seal that comes on the top of some pb jars has been removed or it will arc when you put it in the microwave.

I always keep my peanut butter in the fridge. Why not? Better safe than sorry and I can deal with firm peanut butter.

No. We also buy sunflower butter though, and I do put that in the 'fridge. I made ice-cream at home once and added swirls of peanut butter, in that case I had peanut butter in the freezer. Most products say "refrigerate after opening" if it's necessary (unless you bought it refrigerated in which case it is assumed).

I never put peanut butter in the fridge. It makes it hard and taste funny.

Years ago before peanut butter was homoginized the oil which separated and rose to the top would often become rancid and bad tasting so peanut butter was refrigerated. Todays peanut butter is homoginized and blended therefore it does not need refrigeration.

The only peanut butter I have kept refrigerated was a natural one that the oil separated & I kept having to re-stir it. It said to stir it well & keep in the frig so it wouldn't go rancid. The processed one's that have sweetener's in dont need to be put in the fridge.

If you put it in the fridge after opening it, it would last about 6 months longer than if you left it in room temperature AFTEr opening it.
If it's not yet opened, than it really makes no difference, it'll last until the expiration date.
