an elevator "shute" chute is called a shaft. A dumb waiter is like an elevator only smaller .It is intended to move items from floor to floor without using the stairs . most commonly found in kitchens

They are not called Dumb waiters. A dumb waiter is like an elevator in that it goes from one floor to the next but it is not intended for people it is intended to goods, laundry, food etc. They are put in so people dont have to carry things up and down the stairs.

"Dumb", in this case meaning mute, and "Waiter", meaning something or someone that moves things to where they need to go. Dumbwaiters are usually closet-like lifts in big houses or hotels that allow things like meal trays or piles of linen to be moved between floors easily, without someone having to carry them up the stairs.
They are not designed to carry people, as in an elevator, but many children have tried it anyway... much to their dismay if it gets stuck or a mean sibling leaves them in there!

They aren't dumb waiters. Dumb waiters are just large enough to hold a small tray. They are used to carry food and small things from one level to another.

Because they perform a waiters function, but cannot speak. There are also what are called 'silent butlers.' Small, lidded containers used to dump ashtrays into and remove small foodstuffs from eating areas. Years ago, they were often quite ornate - being made of silver and/or gold and having a fine wood handle.

cuz they can't hear or speak or see....they are"dumb" and do whatever you make them do,.....you make them go "up" or "down"
