and there is a passage that says mormons have a ban on hot drinks, why is that???

This was my answer to this same question that was asked before. I hope this helps explain it for you.
For those that say the Church owns all or part of Pepsi, or Coca Cola, they are mistaken. The church does NOT own any of them.

We are not told that we are NOT ALLOWED, we are told we SHOULD NOT drink Coffee, tea or alcoholic drinks. We have the free will to drink them if we want, but like anything we do, everything has consequences.
It is told because of some of the chemicals in them, not so much the caffeine, and that alcohol is not good for the body. Even for the ones that drink caffinated sodas we are told that if we follow the spirit of the commandment then we shouldn't, but the choice is up to us.
Hot Chocolate is a popular drink for most members of the church, and even chocolate has caffeine in it. We also drink hot herbal teas. Our Word of Wisdom is a Commandment about keeping our bodies healthy. The biggest part of it is; things in MODERATION

You know, my mother-in-law is Mormon...she drinks diet caffeine free soda. I don't remember hearing of any ban on hot drinks before now. I have seen her drink hot tea. I know that formally there has been a ban on caffeinated drinks. But I do not think that is as formal as people would like to think. It is only because of the drug like effects that caffeine is discouraged.
I understand that some devout Mormons do follow restriction and recommendations to the T...but I have not heard of any one being kicked out because they have drank a coffee or soda. In fact, I think that Coca-Cola is a Mormon owned company...I am not positive, but that is what I have heard.

The "hot drinks" thing is not all hot drinks and not just drinks that are hot. It was the way their avoidance of Caffiene was intially expressed as caffiene used to be only found in coffee and tea before the advent of decaf coffee and tea and soda that is full of caffiene.

They do not drink caffiene as it can be addictive and is considered bad for the body the same reason they do not smoke or drink alcohol. It comes from Joseph Smith's writings on maintaining the spirituality of the body by preserving it from harm......I think it comes from his writing the Pearl of Great Price, maybe it is in Doctrines and Covenants I am not sure, but that is what it means.

To be precise the Word of Wisdom says to avoid "hot drinks". The interpretation of that phrase was to mean coffee and tea. If we are asked by our Bishop if we avoid "hot drinks", he will add "meaning coffee and tea."

This includes ice tea, etc. It is not because of caffeine or the temperature. There are other ingredients such as tannic acid that should be avoided. Herb teas are acceptable. Decaf isn't.

Can you imagine this as just a "man-made" law if it was established 175 years ago that tobacco, alcohol, coffee and too much red meat was harmful.

The hot drink ban is really on coffee and tea. The LDS have never been given the reason to this, only that it is a commandment.

The ban to which you are referring is, in practice, coffe and tea.
The reasoning is a revelation called the "Word of Wisdom". It deals with what people should eat and drink. Among other things it calls for no tobacco use, no strong drinks, and the moderate use of meats.

It is not a ban on the temperature of the drink, but rather on the caffeinated content of the drink. They believe that caffein is unhealthy, so they do not permit its consumption.

What they are referring to is Coffee and Tea, more specifically drinks with Caffeine in them. Mormons believe that you should not drink anything with caffeine in it.

I’ve wondered about that too. Is it all hot drinks or just those with caffeine?

Also, somebody told me that Mormons pray for all our presidents alive and dead except for one. Is this true? Which one?

The hot drink ban actually refers to caffeinated drinks... coffee, tea, etc. They forbid caffeine because it is an addictive drug.
