Your friend needs a lawyer. It is the riding schools responsibility to see that it's students only get on horses that are suitable for the riders ability. However, if she/he told them that they were more advanced than they were, it might effect the case.

Before you rush off and call a lawyer, you should find out if your friend signed a waiver and if the riding facility has the waiver sign posted. Most states require that a sign be posted stating that the riding instructor cannot be held responsible for injury and even death to any participant riding a horse. Basically it means you ride at your own risk. Also, most riding instructors are not certified in which insurance is not required. But I'd bet dollar to donuts that your friend signed a waiver. Hopefully she has health insurance.

You might want to check if they made her sign a waiver when she went riding there. She may have signed her rights away.

I don't think a riding school is forced to have insurance, but if it happened on their property their home-owners insurance probably covers injuries.

Around here, Texas, USA, there's signs up at horse places saying they cannot be sued because of injury. But if there's no sign, I'd talk to an attorney.
