Pretty much just a fast way of deleting all files on the card and restoring the actual memory to 'unused' condition.

My tech theory - really it probably just resets the allocation tables - for an SD card the process seems way too fast to actually overwrite all bits.

If you merely delete photographs you will find that the files that they were written to remain on the card and will begin to take up space unnecessarily. As stated above, formatting removes everything, thus returning the card to its maximum capacity.

It the same thing as formatting a hard drive, it's to prepare the drive for data storage. If you format it, you will lose anything stored on it, so make sure you don't care if you lose anything on it.
