for anyone out there who has a hearing ear dog...do any of you own regular dogs too and do you think this would negatively affect a hearing ear dog's ability to work? Would it be bad for the dog to be ar ound other "regular" dogs like at a park, etc?

Well they hear something then they nudge you or something. They are not suppose to bark. They're work dogs, see. They either nudge you or lead you to something that needs attention or both.

Well I just wondered whether they were allowed to play at all...seems kind of mean to make them work 24/7...if i was at a park there wouldnt be much for me to need to hear anyways....what am I suppose to be listening for, someone with a gun?!?

if the dog is at work then yes he does not need to play but if his shirt or sign that he wears is off then yes it is ok for him to play but not while working. no he should not be allowed to play bc that might confuse him.

There is no difference in their work capacity. They are always on duty except when sleeping. Seeing eye dogs and hearing aid dogs have two completely different functions, and therefore, have been taught different skills that help them assist their human. A seeing eye dog has a greater burden on it because their owner cannot navigate for themselves as well as someone with sight. Hearing aid dogs have their own burdens, but a deaf person has much more mobility than a blind person. The only dogs you can pet while on duty are therapy dogs. Service dogs are never to be petted unless you have permission of the person to whom the dog belongs.

These dogs under go a lot of training. Usualy if you already have a dog as a pet they will pick a trained dog that will suit your needs (ex gets along with other dogs, know that it's job comes first). These dogs are very well behaved and adapt to change well. I saw a program about these dogs and it amazing the things they have to pass to be able to get into and pass their training.

According to this site> he Hearing Dog needs to be the only dog in the home. Other types of pets (cats, etc.) are okay, but another dog is too big a distraction to training.<< http://www.servicedogs.org/apply/hearing_app.html
However, I do know that unsighted people often keep their retired dogs, as well as the active working dog..It would depend on the personality and training of the existing pet dog..
For instance, an older couch potato wouldn't be nearly as distracting as an active, and rowdy dog..Most of my own dogs would not affect the working dog, but one of them (higher engery and super dog-social) would certainly interfere..

As long as the dog is properly trained and the training is kept up, it should not be a problem
