Corporeal vision. Corporeal vision is a supernatural manifestation of an object to the eyes of the body. It may take place in two ways: either a figure really present strikes the retina and there determines the physical phenomenon of the vision, or an agent superior to man directly modifies the visual organ and produces in the composite a sensation equivalent to that which an external object would produce. According to the authorities the first is the usual manner; it corresponds to the invincible belief of the seer, e.g. Bernadette at Lourdes; it implies a minimum of miraculous intervention if the vision is prolonged or if it is common to several persons. But the presence of an external figure may be understood in two ways. Sometimes the very substance of the being or the person will be presented; sometimes it will be merely an appearance consisting in a certain arrangement of luminous rays. The first may be true of living persons and even, it would seem, of the now glorious bodies of Christ and the Blessed Virgin, which by the eminently probable supernatural phenomenon of multilocation may become present to men without leaving the abode of glory. The second is realized in the corporeal apparition of the unresurrected dead or of pure spirits.

In the Bible, prophets of old appeared to other people in the Bible. It's a small step to believe that the mother of Christ would appear. The prophets were prophets, but even they didn't carry Jesus literally within. There are legitimate apparitions of Mary... then there are the fakes. The Catholic church has approved the apparitions at La Salette, Fatima, Guadalupe, Knock, and Lourdes. When the prophets appeared to men in the Bible, it wasn't said that the apparitions distracted or took away the focus on Jesus. No, of course not. Rather, Jesus rebuked the thought, in Matthew 17. The Bible tells accounts of angels ministering to others. As prophets and angels have both appeared to people throughout time, Mary as the mother of Jesus, has too. And why not? Is she any less worthy than a prophet or an angel? God sent an angel to her that said she was blessed among women. Never has there been a woman so blessed as the one who carried the messiah.
In legitimate apparitions of Mary, she does what is only right: To lead people to Jesus. The Lady has come bearing a message. She knew Jesus better than anyone; she carried him, she lived with him, the very angels told her about him. Therefore she has been known to tell us about her Son. She pleads with us to turn from sin and to turn to Christ.
For instance, Our Lady of La Sallette tearfully asked people to repent, and said that she prayed for them constantly to Jesus. This is not the request or action of something sinister. The message from Lourdes is about the healing mercy of God. Messages from Our lady of Fatima encouraged people to turn from their unholy ways in order to avoid a terrible chastisement. Our Lady of Guadalupe brought the message of God's mercy, and today she's often referred to as Patroness of the Unborn. At Knock, Ireland Our Lady's message (though unspoken) was of truth.
Sometimes people claim to have seen Mary, but it's right to be cautious about such claims. These are occurrences which must be investigated. Some may be real, while others are not. I know there are Christians who believe even the approved apparitions of Mary are demonic and/or lies. I implore they allow for the rare possibility that a true appearance of Mary could actually happen, since prophets and angels have appeared. And while one is not required to believe in the Marian apparitions, there are still graces and messages that benefit all.

Satan has lots of tricks up his sleeve. He has been watching people all of their lives and he knows which ones will be fooled by his deceptions. He will do anything to get our eyes off of Jesus and on to a false idol.
Mary should be left alone. Her mission was well accomplished and she deserves her rest.

It depends on the apparition. The Catholic Church has the authority given by Jesus to determine which apparitions are of God.
