It depends on the piercing and what you are having xrays of. Example: neck or head xrays, you need to take out earrings, etc. Chest xrays remove necklaces and nipple piercings. I'm an xray tech and sometimes people refuse to remove peircings, I still take the xrays, you just can't see through the metal so something could be missed. If you're paying for the xrays you might as well remove the piercings and get th best images possible.

No. Medical professionals want all piercings, necklaces, bracelets, etc remove so they can get a clear picture of your body.
Jewelry and other external body art appears black on an Xray picture. Two things can happen with this.. one, it can hide problems underneath. The last thing you want is for a doctor to not see a tumor that was hidden by jewelry. And two, sometimes jewelry can be mistaken for a tumor or other unexplained object in the body.
Therefore, it's best to be safe than sorry.

It depends on what part of the body that is being imaged. You don't need to take earrings off for an xray of your foot ( unless your foot is in your mouth). If the metal piercing is in the anatomy area then yes it should be removed.

I am not sure about this, but I am wondering too cause I have my nipples pierced and scared to get an X-ray..However, they do X-rays all the time on people with metal joints and steel rods, so I don't see why a piercing would hurt.
And another thing, will I have to take them out at airport security??

Yes, There is no reason why you can not wear body piercings while getting X-rayed, unless (in the case of the navel ring) it obscures the target (spine) - in this case.
X-ray's have extremely high energies, allowing them to pass through most materials without getting absorbed - so having them on wouldn't effect the subject at all - just the resulting exposure.

Does the dentist take out all of your metal fillings before x-raying your teeth? Of course not. What if you had a metal plate in your head from an accident or a metal replacement hip socket? You don't have to remove the metal, but it could (depending on its size and placement relative to the area being x-rayed) interfere with the results of the picture.

You can have an x-ray with piercings. However, the metal in your piercings will interfere with the quality of the picture. MRI's require you to remove the piercing or it will be pulled out. MRI's also effect tatoo's because the ink in tatoo's contains metal.

Yes you can, however they will ask you to remove them or it. There are some patients who can not remove there piercing in which case you take the x-ray with it in place. It is very common.
