I also prefer interceptor. I don't like Heartguard because problems have been reported with this in some breeds such as the herding breeds. Also, other meds include flea control which I prefer to keep as a topical application and only use it as necessary.

Interceptor is a good brand, so is Iverhart and Heartgard. I know that Iverhart and Heartgard both have guarantees with them that as long as the dog has been started on prevention and is tested yearly then if it ever gets heartworms they will pay for treatment (which is VERY expensive). This also applies to roundworms and hookworms and any other worms that the product says it covers. i dont know if Interceptor has the same guarantee or not. I would talk to the vet. I know that Heartgard is more expensive but Interceptor and Iverhart work just as well. See about any guarantees and then go with what your vet recommends. He could just be trying to save you money (I know for some people that may come to a shock that the vet would actually try to save their clients money!) but if money isnt an issue I would use Heartgard.

Hope this helps and just so you know I have used all 3 of the preventions I listed (had to change when we moved because the clinics didnt offer the same ones)

You have four options: Interceptor, Hartgard, Sentinel and Revolution.

Interceptor is a chewable tablet that protects from heartworms and some intestinal parasites. It's given once monthly and is very safe- if your dog as a beef allergy you cannot use it.

Hartgard is similar to interceptor but does not protect against the same range of intestinal parasites. it is not safe for collies.

Sentinel is also similar to the above except that it also provides flea protection.

Revolution is different from the three above. Its a topical liquid that you apply directly to the skin between the shoulder blades. It protects against fleas, intestinal parasites and heartworms. Revolution claims to protect against ticks, but only does so in cats. It's also equally safe.

These four are all equally good in terms of protection. Interceptor is probably the least expensive. Your vets recommendation is quite fine and that is what the practice I work at recommends.

Interceptor is great, as are Heartgard, Iverheart, and Sentinel They all protect against Heartworm disease. One difference between them is the type of intestinal parasites that they cover. Interceptor and Sentinel protect against whipworms, roundworms and hookworms. Heartgard plus and Iverheart plus protect against roundworms and hookworms. Your vet may prefer Interceptor because whipworms are more common in your area, he prefers better preventative parasite coverage or he has more experience with Interceptor. It's a great product, I've used it, I would follow his advice.

Ummm, you should be getting a second opinion from another Vet, not the internet. Your going to have people telling you crazy things, just pick up the phone and call another Vet's office. Or see if there is a online Vet or do research on the Interceptor Medication online. Good luck !

There are several available, and Interceptor is a good choice. Take your vet's recommendation.

Typically, it is wise to go with what your dog's vet (not really your vet now is it?) recommends. He/she has done the research and knows what he/she's talking about. Sides, your dog's vet has probably taken into consideration potential side effects/allergic reactions and has decided that Interceptor may be the best choice for your pup.

Then he's a good Vet because that's what he chose.
