Depends. Some have no where else to go. Others, feel that no one is worse than someone going no where. Still others for the friendship built over time, even if the "spark" is gone. No to people will tell you the same thing.

With the way relationships are treated today, I would rather stay with someone I was ok with, then trying to find someone to date, with todays attitude towards it.

well, I have been there and still suffering from that ....I have been in relationship that was not working , but yet I stayed because fo the following reasons:
1. I loved my gf so much, that I wanted to make everything possible to save the relationship although it was impossible to me
2. I was afraid to see her in the arms of someone else in spite of I love her ..it really makes suffer.
3. I enjoy making sex with her..she's really good at it ..
4. I was afraid being alone , and losing her completely in my life
5. I was afraid of losing my best friend in the world
6. I didn't want to hurt her and her to want me ...

some I would say people who are in love but whose relationship is not working, cannot quit each other like that, because there are strong bonds between them ...!! it's never have been an easy decision to break a relationship ...So, people stay eventhough it is not going anywhere, to benefit the company of the person till the last drop of it ..until neither of us cannot support the suffering anymore and the relationship collapsed..

Hope that helps ..

It is comfortable to remain in the same place even though the situation is not healthy or good. Most people are afraid of change.

Fear of being alone, fear of change, lots of reasons. One of my best friends was dating this girl when I first met him. She was a nutjob, jealous, aggressively hostile to other women, but also whiny and clingy. I asked him, why?? You're a good lookin guy, you're young, you're smart. Why are you with her? He said it was just easier to be with her than to split up. He openly admitted to me he did not love her. That was 3 years and 2 kids ago. He's not happy but he's not going anywhere either.

I guess some people don't have very high expectations from life.

Lots of reasons, regretfully. For some they are afraid of being alone. Some keep hoping it will go somewhere. Some don't really want it to go any further anyway so they stay. And some just plain refuse to give up trying!

Because it's "comfortable" and what they are used to
They fear that they will not be able to find someone else
Afraid of hurting the other person
Fear that breaking up will be the wrong decision and they will regret it
Fear of disappointing themselves or others
Not wanting to admit the failure of the relationship

Maybe b/c they haven't learned how to be alone and/or to value themselves. Some people just think they need someone--anyone to be there. The problem is that the wrong choice in partners still leaves a person alone.

Probably because they have been in a relationship so long they are afraid to start looking for someone new.

Because they are content with just having someone available... and they may be afraid to end it, that they may not find someone else right away. Fear of loneliness perhaps. but if you don't take a leap of faith, you may not find the prize around the corner.

The fear of being alone is intense. Also, when a person is in a hole, the only way to get out is to stop digging.
