No it's not. You have realised the important thing about the wedding, it's just one day, and not worth getting into huge debt over. Stick to your budget, get some friends to help you decorate it and I guarantee no one will be thinking "ghetto" on the day, the guests are your friends and family after all, and they should not criticise.

Well I don't think it's necessarily "ghetto". You can get a few of your girlfriends together and really decorate nicely, get some fabric and do the walls and floors if necessary - what is your theme? Also as an alternative, check out the local fire halls, gyms and recreation halls in your area- they can be an inexpensive alternative to the community room. I too am on a tight budget but I found a place in my area that has a nice auditorium that I plan on decorating to the hilt and it only cost me $400 for 5 hours. If you need any more ideas, this is what I love to do, I'll be happy to help out so feel free to message or email me.

I think a lot of this probably has to do with where you are located geographically and how you normally celebrate weddings in that area. To be honest I would probably be a little judgmental of having a wedding reception in a community center in my area (at least until I got there). Here weddings are traditionally formal affairs with a cocktail hour, a multi course sit down meal, open bar, band/dj, and are usually held either at a hotel, banquet center, or country club. I just feel that the connotation of a community center would be a dry wedding, tile floors and stucco, and a buffet. For my family, friends, and area this is more like a party than a wedding. I am in no manner judging you or your nephew's wedding just explaining how people my have reacted when they first heard about it.

I actually had mine in a community room and everyone loved it. It was so beautiful and simple. We did not have a ton of money either. A few people that were invited actually called me to tell me they wanted to do the same thing because there marriage was more important to them then spending a million dollars. I was also worried that it would be ghetto but it was just a beautiful day instead and it is really no different than spending boo coo buck on a reception hall.

Good for you for sticking to your budget and being realistic about it. Far too many couples go into debt or sacrifice a down-payment on a home to afford to rent a hotel or whatever. And it really doesn't matter - you can have something just as nice in a hall, as in a hotel.

As long as you're happy with the reception, forget about what anyone else thinks. In five years, your wedding will be one of many that your friends and family have attended, but you'll look back on it as YOUR special day. Congratulations.

Lol, it's not ghetto. You can't help that you don't have the money. You can do lots of cute things for your wedding on a budget. Just look up some websites online to get some ideas. Believe me- I'm going through the same thing right now!!!

You are so funny. I disliked my reception location as well, but it is all you can afford. As long as you make it beautiful, it's all the guest will remember.

We strung tulle from the rafters and draped it on walls. I bought rose ball bouquets and hung them from the ceiling. We also used white lights for a classy look.

It didn't even look like the place we started with, and I had so many compliments.

Save the money for something else, and go with the community room. Tulle is very cheap, yet looks classy and transforms the room. I would stock up.

Congrats!

It sounds like it's going to be lovely! I've decorated horrid community rooms, barrooms, and cheesy church halls. It's amazing what the decorating can do! My favorites were string white Christmas lights from the ceiling to give the appearance of stars. It gave great ambience. Nobody will notice anyway with the food and drink and music. Have fun!

As long as you plan the decorations and such as you want them. No matter where you hold your wedding it will still look beautiful.

You would be surprised at how many weddings as well as receptions are held in such places. And they are done VERY nicely.
Don't worry.
