They were also wrong about almost all of nature and medicine. We have progressed somewhat since that time, we have very little to learn from the Ancient Greeks these days and I speak of someone who studied the Greek language at school and Greek philosophy at University.
Oh and also not all Greeks thought that way by any means, much of Greek philosophy before Plato at least was unambiguously atheist.

The Greeks were opressed by the Romans at the time Christianity came into favour with the Roman Empire. They didn't "choose" to see a higher power, it was forced upon them in the same way it was forced upon every other pagan community in those days.
