Absolutely. Yoga is to increase yogic perception; it isn't just fancy excercise. And Zen Buddhism is very disciplined and almost harshly so, physically and mentally, not accounting for the asceticism it requires. I studied eastern philosophy and religion under a "western" Buddhist who spoke of his grueling time in a Chinese Buddhist monastary.

Like anything else, sometimes it's watered down, and sometimes it isn't. I've met a number of very serious American practitioners of Eastern religion who refuse to take the easy way out. But look at some (not all) of the New Age groups and the way they've tinkered with certain aspects of Eastern thought, and yes, it's pretty sugar-coated, dummied-down stuff. But the watered-down junk sells quite nicely in other parts of the world, too--not just in America.

From my experience studying Buddhism and Taoism from the original texts I would so no at least about those two. They are both extremely peaceful and do not need to be sugar coated.

There is a lot of very very wooly thinking about Eastern mysticism and religion in the West, quite a lot of it is quite nasty stuff really.

A lot of them seem to have a nice cosy image of Buddhism that neglects the fact that it is non theistic.
