I think it should be used for a close family member or someone you are in a relationship with. Not by servers at restaurants and people at the checkout lane. That drives me crazy, especially if there's a teenager calling me sweetheart.

I would call someone sweetheart if they are a beloved member of my family or a boyfriend, fiancee', or husband.I work in the retail business and constantly have creepy guys call me "honey" or "Sweetheart" when they have been a long time customer and know my name and I know theirs and call them by it.I have even told them to,please call me by my name, and that only my family and close friend get permission to call me Sweetheart or honey.I understand that some people do this because they do not know your name,or have a bad memory.Others are just lazy I am sure. But it still creeps me out if they do not have my permission. There are other options...Maam, Miss...that are respectful.I could very easily call them by something disrespectful like asshole or jerk but they would be offended, but are surprized when I am offended when they call me sweetheart.

When they are being unbelievably sweet!! I love giving someone pet names, but what I love more is when a really handsome Italian guy uses them on me. ;)
