they got weird when i came home from the hospital, and it continued till they fought . violently. i lost part of my thumb in the process, at 1 a.m. they were fighting to the death. we now have to keep them seperated, the beagle continues to growl at the golden even though the golden is submissive-always. how in the world do we ever get them to be able to even pass in the hall or the yard without the beagle going off? he is the aggresser and initiates everything. the beagle is 10 yrs. old and the golden is 1 yr. old. both fixed.

Hmmm...the rabies shot thing is a little funny. Rabies in animals will kill them in around 10 days....it's a very quick acting disease...It's dominance. Research online for dog trainers/behaviorists to see if they can help. You need a professional. Call your vet for suggestions. I would love to say this will pass, but it may not. With your beagle now becoming a senior, he could just be getting very irked off at the little perks of your golden. It could definitely be age related. But as I said, you need a pro. Call quickly and try to get this resolved!

I would guess that your hospital stay/ return weirded your dogs out and triggered this. You didn't mention if there had been any previous problems between them that could shed light on the problem so I can't really give you exact advice. As a dog trainer I like to observe the dogs in the home so I can get a real understanding of what's going on. The safest thing to do is first have the beagle screened for medical issues (thyroid disease is a common old age disease and can cause aggression, it is easily treated) and contact a dog trainer to come to your home and evaluate the situation. Ethically I won't give advice if someone has been injured by a dog without meeting them, there are too many unknowns via the internet. There are a number of ways to deal with this but it must be tailored to your exact situation.

I am assuming that the Beagle has been in your family much longer and came first before the Golden. In my opinion it sounds like a territorial issue as well as the issue of the Beagle being the "alpha male" as it's sometimes called. I feel like given time the two will get back to living together peacefully but I guess that could also depend on how long they lived together before this fight occurred. I'm sure the Beagle is probably in "protection mode" trying to keep harm of any kind from you. They both sound like wonderful pets and I'm sorry about losing part of your thumb. Hopefully this will work itself out in time. Thank You.

well, it could be dominance and it could be simple aggression. OR it could be due to your beagle's age. some dogs really do become senile with age. they start to act completely out of character and there is no other explantation for it. many groomers will groom the same dog for the duration of the dog's life so they can see when old dogs "lose it". has the beagle been acting strangely in any way (aside from attacking the golden)?

Has the beagle always been this aggressive or is this new behaviour? If it's new behaviour, he really needs to see the vet as sudden changes in temperament often have a physical cause.

If that's not it, I think you need to get a dog behaviourist in to asses what's going on with the beagle - very unusual behaviour for this breed.

I am going through the same problem, try and introduce the beagle as the care taker. Have him think that he is responsible for the puppy. I have mine go get the puppy from out doors. I reward her with training bones by pedigree. (She seems to like that brand) I make her play with him supervised only in the beginning. (reward this behavior also) You will be surprised how quickly he will take to the new dog. Always let the older one think he is charge.

the beagle needs to be submissive to you. you need to be the pack leader. The beagle is being the dominate female.Every time you get them two together and the beagle growls, grab her neck. also lie her down on her back and have the golden stand next to her. if she attempts to attack, you attack by grabbing her neck. you have to be the dominant male. you have to be in control. In turn that will enventaully change your beagle's behavior. its not the dog's fault. he's feeding off your energy.
