Anything other than leather or suede. Leather sticks to you in the summer, and it gets cold in the winter. Suede looks dirty no matter how clean it is because it shows a print whenever you touch it. Also, I'd suggest keeping the dog off the couch. Don't take that the wrong way or anything, I'm just saying that in my house animals belong on the floor--not on my brand new sofa.

I have a micro suede couch. Well two love seats and a chair. I love it. They look very nice and stay very nice. They are very easy to clean which is nice since I have 3 small children and 1 on the way. We used to have a small dog (shih tzu) but we got gave him to hubby's aunt. (He wanted to trip me all the time and being pregnant and falling isn't a good combination.) I would look into the micro suede. It is the BEST!!

microsuede! it wipes clean, and dogs nails cant hurt it. You can litterally wipe it down with a wet washcloth and let it dry to remove almost any stain. My friends son scribbled sharpie on her microsuede couch.. and they were even able to get that out!

tip: my favorite way to clean my couch is to take all the cushions off.. mix 1/4 cup fabirc softener with about 1 gallon warm water, and with a couple of clean washcloths, wipe the whole thing down. You can scrub any stains with plain water and that usually will bring them up. Let it dry, then using a dryer sheet, wipe the couch all in one direction to make the suede lay down. it also smells wonderful when you are done!

LEATHER!

I hated leather couches, but we were given one and we can't really afford one. And I won't go back anytime soon. Muddy pawprints, spit up, no problem just wipe it up with a wet cloth!
