My cousin is looking to buy a puppy and she wants to go to Pauley's Pups in Ashland, Virginia to make her purchase. She has researched and found that the owner only buys dogs from breeders that he personally meets and inspects (all in Virginia), but still doesn't know if this place is to be trusted.

She doesn't want to buy from a store and wind up financing a puppy mill. I have told her that I know Petland is a puppy mill supporter, but we can't find any concrete info on Pauley's Pups.

Please, if you have dealt with this store, or know someone who has, tell me the story so I can help her make an educated decision.

She is not planning on making a rash decision, and is looking at shelters too, but any info would be appreciated.

DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM THERE!!! I live here in Richmond and can tell you they get all their puppies from puppy mills. The richmond aspca has been trying to get the place shut down for years. If the owner tells you he meets all the owners ask hi how many times he goes to missiouri and visits the puppy factory. This guy is a liar and a very cruel person to be selling and treating animals the way he does, an animals life and suffering shouldn't be for profit. Please few the link I added and feel free to do more research for yourself and you will find the same things everywhere.

I would never buy from a place like this. Those breeders are irresponsible and not reputable. Any breeder that does not want to personally meet and interview the person purchasing their puppy, does not care about the breed. Moreover, these are not people who are going to stand behind the puppy in terms of health guarentee, these are not people who will be there to answer questions throughout the puppy's life time.

A responsible and reputable breeder will interview you and expect that you will interview them, they will show you all the dogs in the house, introduce you to the puppy's parent(s)/relatives, will stand behind their dogs in terms of health, will be there for questions through out the dogs life time. These are places where you will go into their homes and see the conditions the dogs actually live in. It's a person you can form a relationship with- but they also will not sell to anyone and if they are not comfortable selling to you, will tell you why. These are also people who will tell you if they do not think the breed is a good fit and why.

Pauley may have inspected the places and they may be clean, but that says nothing about the ethics of the people breeding these dogs.

I would not purchase from them. Any reputable breeders knows how much work goes into taking care of one breed, and I couldn't image two. If she has that may dogs than she is probably a puppymill, or a the very least a kennel. I personally think that any breed does not do well in a kennel situation and that there is no way that you could take adequate care of that many dogs. Also, there is no way that they dogs could get a suitable amount of attention and affection from people. I would find a puppy somewhere else.

Any purchasing from a petstore is financing a puppy miller or back yard breeder. Regardless of what the owner says about personally inspecting the breeders. You have no idea of the living conditions, the number of breeds the person has, what the health of the parents might be, etc.

If she has a particular breed in mind, start at www.akc.org and go to the parent club of that breed. Look for a responsible breeder in your area that freely gives you information on the breed, the parents, allows you to visit, interact with the puppies and helps to pick out the puppy that would best suit your lifestyle.

NO reputable breeder will EVER sell a puppy through a third party. Breeders who care about their puppies always want to meet potential purchasers in person to make sure they are suitable owners.

Tell your cousin to avoid the place.

Edit: jordanfamilyof6, as I said no REPUTABLE, CARING breeder will sell through a third party/pet store. If they "can't" sell a pup, they KEEP IT until a suitable buyer comes along.

I wouldn't. The owner may just be saying that to get business. If she is looking for a pup go to puppyfind.com , there are even some shelter dogs on there.

The guy offers a link to the Continental Kennel Club, so is supporting this registry by doing so. That's a big red flag right there as that registry is the scam one created by puppy mills to "register" their litters. I would not consider anything from this place.

You ned to answer this question....why would a breeder sell puppies to a pet store if they could themselves make that amount selling the pup?????????? Even if the store gets them from local "breeders" , they are no more than BYB that are breeding for profit and to sell to the stores. Any GOOD breeder would want to screen the new owners themselves, and would rather make the money themselves.
It is a BAD idea!!!! This pet store is WORSE than others since it is trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes!!!!!!
