Yes definitly. I would not allow any one to swear in front of my children. I would plainly tell them that I don't like for my children to hear that sort of language. Most of the time people will stop.

Although I think it should be common courtesy to curb swearing around children, it is also not a good example to antagonize. I think the safest action is to wait and discuss the language with your child and explain that some people use those type of words freely while some others do not use them at all. I would explain that I can only control what I do - so I have to put up with it when I am around the people who curse freely, and I would appreciate it if the child not use those words. I would also ask if the child wants to know the meaning of the words so that he/she doesn't have to go with what peers make come up with.

You should feel able to stand up to someone if you don't like what they're doing and politely ask them to stop. People are going to swear no matter where you are, but if it's loud and derogatory enough to warrant a complaint, I'd say something to the person. If they continued to swear after I asked them to stop, and if I were in a place like a restaurant or movie theater, I would ask to speak to the manager and let them take care of it.

As a parent, you are obligated to protect your children from harm. So speak up. However (without knowing the kids ages), keep in mind that many parents shield too much, and their kids end up going to school, or to visit friends or whatever, and are exposed to it anyway. While they might (fat chance) think of you as strong in your convictions, and morally pure, a paragon of parenting, chances are they will just see you as different from the rest of the world, and rebel against it, feeling smothered and restricted. PS. We had a Swear Jar in our house. Cost a nickle to swear, whether you lived there or not.

I will say "Excuse me" and lead my children away for a while. If our company is really needed, the "potty mouth" should clean up his act and call us back. If not, no point in my children being in such company with lack of class.

Depends. If I were in their home I would ask my children to leave the room. Otherwise, I would say it nicely, like "oops, little ears" If they have any couth, they'll get the picture.

Absolutely, I've done it quite often. I always ask politely the first time, and for the most part, haven't had any problems.
