To make their voices heard, and to learn what's going on in the minds of their fellow earthlings.

First, I suggest you read the atheists' answers and ignore the others who are just guessing.

Second, if you search you'll find this question has been asked a few times before. And most of the regulars have put a good deal of time and thought into their answers.

And many of them, like me, have gotten tired of answering. Or perhaps the wise ones have saved their answers so they can copy/paste.

But in short, there are as many different reasons as there are atheists. There may be some commality between answers, but there isn't just one answer.

I am not an athiest but I do not neccisarily believe in a traditional God or gods. I believe any question regarding dieties, or the lack thereof, belongs in the R & S section because they do deal with both categories. Some people who do not believe are on the path to believing and some people want more clarification on what they really do believe. As long as any question is handled with respect to the beliefs of others then I think it should be in this category.

An extra reason: to see how many different ways people can spell "atheist"
"athesist" is the latest variant!

More seriously, viewpoints are for discussing!
By testing mine against others, I may improve my understanding, or someone else's.

And no controversial viewpoint should be left unchallenged in case less informed people imagine it was a settled and undisputed fact.
(the possible exception to that comes with the most idiotic questions from ANY viewpoint. "Never argue with a complete fool: a passer-by may not quickly be able to tell the difference.")

Being atheist doesn't mean you don't have spiritual beliefs, it just means you don't adhere to the belief in an all powerful god etc. Besides that, being an atheist doesn't mean you don't have any understanding of religious beliefs, it jsut means you don't buy into any one of them completely. Or perhaps some of them are trying to broaden their horizons, learn new things, or share their ideas with others. That's what this is all about, not just sticking to things you already know about.

It's interesting.

Most atheist did a great deal of study and soul searching before leaving their belief of birth behind. With all that study, you do tend to get interested in the subject.

For myself, I'm Buddhist, and atheist. I've been studying toward ordination for about 6 years. I would point out that some religions, and certainly spirituality, require no belief in a Deity.

My daughter became an atheist in high school, after about 11 years of catholic school. She takes courses in religious studies because she finds the subject interesting. Neither of us are those that attack theists for their beliefs. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and to be free from attack for those beliefs. As long as you don't use your beliefs to cause me or others trouble, I have no problem with whatever you believe.

1) Belief in God is not the only form of religion or spirituality despite what Christians think.

2) Discussion of religion and spirituality is not exclusive to the religious and spiritual. Conversely, would you expect only those of royal blood to have the ability to post and answer questions in the Royalty section?

A straight answer would be you don't need to be religious to discuss religion. Besides, just because you define yourself as Atheist that doesn't mean you're not spiritual which is what this section also embraces - spirituality.

The same reason why Christians seek out atheists...because they want to convince the other that their way is the right way of thinking.

Lessee...

There's lots of misinformation about many subjects that theists tend to like to pass around as though it were true. Someone has to stand up for reality.

There's a lot of misinformation about other religions that theists tend to pass around as though it were true. Atheists and agnostics have a more objective perspective.

There's a lot of outright superstition passed off as truth here. Someone has to point it out, because theists won't.

After reading most of the posted answers, my conclusion is some type of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is what brings Atheists to the R&S section, why not the Smarty Pants Know-it-All section, or the Intellectually Superior section...HMMMM food for thought...touche!
