It depends. If he was out for 3 weeks, did anyone check on him up until now? If no one visited, called, or sent him anything until now, that could be his reason. But it does not excuse his rude reaction. Wait until he seems calmed down and ask him kindly if the gift disappointed him in some way and why.

yes , i feel that you have every right to question him about his reaction. there is no acceptable excuse on this planet for that type of hurtful, and extremely rude behavior. as a suggestion, you may want to confront him on behalf of the other people who pitched in on the gift, and not so much for yourself. you may want to say something like " you may not realize it ,but you really hurt the people who pitched in to buy you the gift. they dont understand your reaction, and are wondering why you reacted so negatively to it. is there something they could have done differently that would have pleased you? they deserve some kind of explanation, dont you think?" p.s.- that was a very nice thing ya'll did for him. most folks would have been appreciative.

My first thought is that none of you visited or called him while he was out. Did anyone send even so much as send him flowers, card, anything? I could understand his anger if this was the only gesture you made in the entire 3 weeks.

Ugh, how rude was that. I would say something def. Just a simple "Dudu you do know that WE chipped in to gte that for you". Why did you chuck it". Either way, his response may still be ignorant as his behavior! Some people are just RUDE!

not exactly the grateful reaction you'd hoped for i'm sure....
i'd let it slide however....sounds like the guys been thru enough, he's just survived an accident and missed lot's of work....he's suffering physically, emotionally, and financially....he's stressed out, and maybe the "get well" gift just reminded him of all that he's going thru.....since you didn't mention a history of rude behavior, i assume it's an isolated incident

It's his gift, so he's free to do with it what he wants. Obviously there must be something else going on with him besides just his physical pain. I'm sorry for him. Instead of confronting him, maybe you could approach him and see if there's anything you can do to help him.

What a rude individual. If he really didn't want it, he can have throw it out when he gets home. But seriously, who doesn't want free fruit? Ridiculous.
Confronting him could be tricky. Maybe just ask him why he did it.

I would take it out of the trash and tell him that you know someone less selfish who might appreciate it.
