First of all, this is going to take some time and adjustment on his part. You need to purchase a crate for him. Make it homey, feed him in it etc.The crate needs to become his den. When you are not home, he needs to be crated so he is not loose.
Secondly, when he goes outside, praise him. Make him think he did the most incredible thing in the world. If he likes treats, add a little treat to that. Take him out on a similar schedule that you would a puppy you are housebreaking- every couple of hours. To help this process, it might be beneficial to put a bell near the door so that you can ring it everytime you take him out. The idea behind this is that between ringing the bell and the praise outside, he will learn an appropriate means of communicating to you that he needs to go to the bathroom.
Thirdly, do not give him run of the house and confine him when you cannot supervise him. Start with one room at a time, and after a couple of weeks, give him access to two rooms. Do this overtime, and anytime he goes in the house, cut down on the amount of space he has access to.
Lastly, remember that he's had 1.5 years of a bad habit and this is a stubborn breed. Stay consistent and be patient; it'll come.

Just give him time. He was in an enviorment with no order probaly from a young age so that is what he knows and what was o.k. for him My pit has been trained by his second day. He was a puppy also that is a big factor. But since he is grown you have to use dog psycology. Let him go outside as soon as you wake, after he eats and later in the evening and he will get the message. Don't rush him either. Don't wait for him just leave him be for at least 15 minutes. Let him get some alone dog time. He needs to explore and have fun. But definitely let him out after every meal because dogs just like people use it regularly like clock work. We all no how a good meal will have you flushing. So try that and before you no it he will be trained and he will even let you no when he wants to go outside. Weather it be to use it or get some air. (let me no how it goes.)

Please don't listen to people who are telling you to stick his nose in it. The most effective way to get an animal or a human to do something is through reward. Start the process of having him go outside. When he starts to "go" in the house, guide him or pick him up and take him outside. When he potties outside, pet him, tell him he's a good boy, and give him a small treat. If you don't have the patience for this or are afraid of getting a little tinkle or poo on you, then you may want to reconsider owning a dog. Poo and pee washes off, it won't kill you. This training will not happen overnite, and consistency is the key. If he goes in the house, no reward. Do not punsih the dog for going in the house, just withhold reward. Eventually the dog will link the event of treat giving with going potty outside. You may want to phase out the treat over time and just go with the praise when he finally gets into his routine, but that's up to you. And again, PLEASE do not slap your dog, or be mean to him, or put his nose in anything. Patience will get you everywhere.

Put a body harness on your dog and a 5-6 foot long leash. Whenever the dog is inside and not crated than tie the leash to your belt..so you will be constantly seeing the dog. When you see it start to search/circle/signal otherwise that it needs to go, walk the dog immediately outside to an appriopriate potty area. Make sure you use your chosen command word, give plenty of praise and treat when completed (make sure you have treats in your pocket, don't delay with rewarding the dog). Do this until your dog is consistently trying to drag you to the door to show you that it neds to go outside.
Make sure you've cleaned the inside of the house of all priors accidents, this means not just getting rid of the visible stains but of the enzymes..use a good cleaner rated for cleaning biological stains and odors... I use Orange TKO (it's great for anything in the house [laundry, bedding, general cleaning] and safe for pets) or Nature's Miracle...make sure you buy the dog formula

Treat him like a puppy. Crate train him. Keep him in the crate when you are sleeping, not home or not able to watch him. Take him outside immediately when you take him out of the crate. Stay outside with him until he goes. Praise when he goes. Take him out 15 minutes after eating, stay outside with him until he goes. Praise when he goes. When you have him loose in the house keep an eye on him for signs that he needs to go, sniffing, circling and take him outside, tell him "potty outside" and stay with outside until he goes, praise when he goes. If he has an accident that you witness tell him "no, potty outside" and take him outside. If he has an accident and you do not see it unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it. Do not yell at the dog, do not hit him and DEFINITELY do not stick his nose in his accidents.

You have to be consistant with your techniques. Watch him while he is in the house. When you see him start sniffing around and/or raising his tail it probably means that he has to go outside. You may also want to try to use the piddle pads that you can buy in the store. Put one right by whatever door you would use to put him outside. Get him used to going there and then eventually take the pad away and when you see him heading for the door and the pad, put him outside instead. He will eventually come to realize that that feeling means that he has to go outside to potty. Best of luck to you!

Every time he goes in the house, grab him and stick his nose in it. It sounds cruel but it works. They don't like the smell of it so he'll stop and you have to get a doggie-door so he can go out when he needs to go.
