It's generally caused by either a fungus or by over active sebacious glands. The sebacious glands are pushing sebum through a small opening in the top of the gland (Which consists of the top three layers of the epidermis). When there is too much sebum trying to push through too small of a hole in the epidermis, the skin is pushed off. That's why you see flakes This is why dandruff shampoos are so dangerous. Firs of all, they contain the same active ingredient as rat poison (Zinc Pyrithione) and what that ingredient does is tears off the top three layers of your scalp. Voila', no more problem! Right? Wrong, now ALL of your sebacous glands are exposed and they ALL become over active. When you try to stop using your Rat Poison Cocktail every day your problem is ten-fold worse! This problem needs to be cured with either a trip to the dermatologist for some anti-fungal shampoo (He will be able to tell you where your problem is stemming by looking at the type of dandruff you have. If it's dry and flaky or more of an oily type of buildup) or by using a shampoo that normalizes the scalp. L'anza makes one called Remedy.

dry scalp leads to the dead skin cells flaking off to form dandruff. this could just be a quick fix or it could mean a more serious condition like psorasis or seborrheic dermatitis. if you struggle with dandruff there should be a special section in your local grocery store with specialty shampoos for dandruff. Nizoral is a good one.
