Many different reasons. Some are simply afraid of commitment and giving up an independent lifestyle. Others, well from past hurts. When people have been burned from past relationships, or marriages, its easy to feel like it is not worth it to marry again. Sometimes, its just an excuse instead of saying " I am not sure you are the one for me for a life time".
When you have had bad experiences from relationships, it can make you real gun shy from jumping back into a commitment again. I know for me, I am learning to be independent and all on my own. It feels good and very powering!
If you are in a situation like this with a significant other, ask why.....

I'm scared because I married my high school sweet heart. He was very mentally and physically abusive. I was married for 10 years. I was scared to get out so one day my daughter said divorce him don't stay for me and I did. Now I have a great man that I will never marry. When you marry a man thinks he owns you.

sometimes its because they are scared they will looses them and get divorced,it could also be that they will worry that they wont be able to go have fun and if they can they will worry that they will get a call every five minutes and wont be able to have fun.

Because they know that half of western marriages end in divorce, and divorce can be very expensive and/or painful.

Because it is a huge commitment not to be taken lightly, and it is painful to end if it comes to that.

Because they don't trust them selves that they won't cheat.
In other words, they might get bored with only one partner, and they allready know that.
