I have gained over 20 pounds since radioactive treatment for Graves. As a result of the treatment I am now HYPO. How is the world do I lose all this extra weight with a slow metabolism? What works for you?

You need to have your TSH below 2.0, usually around 1.0 to have any weight loss while hypothyroid. A better test for dosing thyroid meds is the Free t4 and Free T3. If the free T3 is below midrange, then that shows you may need to be on a T4/T3 medication. Usually most doctors put their patients on a T4 medication and they do fine. If symptoms still persist and the Free t3 is below midrange, then switching to a T4/T3 med may help. I know a few women who lost weight when they switched to Armour. It didn't happen this way for me, but I do feel a lot better.

Unfortunately the weight does not come off as easily as it went off. Being hypo, we digest food differently so you may need to change your diet and exercise more.

There are many groups on yahoo that deal with thyroid, some with losing weight. You might want to do a group search and join a yahoo message board. There's one called Living Well With Hypothyroidism that deals with the weight problems.

Are you on thyroid medication? I am hypothyroid and I am on a synthetic hormone to regulate it...that should usually clear up any weight issues. If you already are and it hasn't done anything, I suggest exercising (which can be a viscious cycle b/c often with hypo you lack the energy to do it), and trying to avoid a lot of sugars and other foods that are difficult to metabolize. Try eating whole grains and veggies and get lots of protein.

You need to see an endorcinologist who can help with your hypoactive thyroid. The endocrinologist can work with you on treatment options and develop a program to help you lose the weight despite the slow metabolism.

i have a high metabolism, apparently cardiac exercise raises it, sauna's raise the heart rate but not blood pressure, a perfect workout.
take a hot sauna then a cold shower and go back in the sauna repeat this a few times.
Great way to get clean and exercises you as well.
Try your local scandic hotel for a sauna or local sports hall.
