I have always used turbotax.
I like the software because it goes through all the questions. It checks for errors or discrepencies. Thats if you dont have a complicated return.
Irs also lists some great sites where you can file for free. The website will be updated later this month.
Honestly I have found that the irs website is ok. SOme of the info on there is difficult to understand. They also have the teltax number with all sorts of topics. Toll-Free, 1-800-829-1040.
But if you call the irs and actually talk to someone I have discovered most of the time they dont know what they are talking about.

The best free help you can get is right here. I've noticed there are a lot of people participating who know at least the basics and you can get answers fairly quickly.

The next best is to call the IRS. In my experience, you will often get inexperienced tax professionals who can do no more than answer basic questions, and they will sometimes refuse to answer if your situation is too complicated. They don't want to "commit" and be liable for their advice. Too bad, really. (Has anyone else noticed this?)

I'm not sure, but I think HR Block will do your return for free if you don't intend to file. You pay their fee when you're ready to file.

Most of what's on IRS.gov is pretty clear, unless yu have a complex return, in which case you should probably talk to a CPA.

The irs website has a search box which works pretty well at finding info you want.
