Apparently evryone knew about this except me and apparently it is a big deal. But i have no idea what it means... i was expecting them to break up soon. Can anyone enlight me on what this means?

So they're sort of going to get married... and there isn't anyway for me to stop them?

I always thought that a promise ring was a promise to be faithful to the one to whom the ring was given. I think other people use them as rings of faith as well as rings promising purity of self. The best answer is that a promise ring means whatever the two people wearing them decides they mean.

A promise ring is a ring that(usually) a guy gives a girl and if she accepts it it means she agrees not to sleep with a guy before she gets married. So really it's like a pre-engagement ring because "back in the day" when more girls were still virgins before they got married, if they had a steady boyfriend and they were serious he would give her a promise ring which meant she would save her virginity for him basically when they got married. So yeah, it may not mean all of that today but it does mean she won't sleep with anyone other than the person who gave her the ring.

Hes just saying that he loves her that hes not ready for engagment to be married yet but promises and announces his love for her. This usually leads to an engagment ring. Promise rings arn't used that much anymore but they are still around. When I was in high school they were popualr. Its not really a "big" deal but its means a little something.

A promise ring is usually given to a girl by a guy (never heard of a guy wearing one too, kind of fruity if you ask me). Usually they are too young to be engaged, so the promise ring signifies that he promises himself to her until they are old enough or ready to be engaged. It's like the difference between going out with a guy and going steady with a guy.

The promise ring is the stopgap solution for men who don't want to break up with their girlfriends, but they don't want to give them a wedding ring either. See also: the 3-year fiance.

My brother is doing this with his girlfriend of more than 3 years. If you ask me, these people need to get hitched or get off the pot (so to speak).

A promise ring indicates a promise to an engagement later on. He is telling her his intentions of a long term committed relationship.

It means they are very serious about one another and definitely have no intention of breaking up soon.
A promise ring is similar to an engagement ring, like one step before engagement I guess you could say.

He "promises" to marry her someday...it's more of a "shut-up" ring. It's a guys way of cutting off the "he's never going to ask me to marry him" arguement without actually having to ask her to marry him. Also, it's usually a guy's way to get in her pants if she's the won't have sex until I'm married kind of girl.

a promise ring is like a pre-engagement ring. it means he want to be with you forever and its pretty much to keep a promise that you 2 will get married

well, a promise ring could be that he loves her very much and he promises to be faithful to her or that they will get married soon, and least they intend to.
