I recently went to a place where paintings were sold and pretty much the only type of art was futuristic, mixed media stuff. I was sort of disappointed because I love classic style paintings. The bold colors and light/dark contrast in baroque period art was beautiful. Are the old styles dead for good?

Well, at least in Europe, museums with older paintings make longer queues (specially with tourists ;-) than Modern Art ones.
I think people who are not used to watch Art tend to like classical more because they understand it.
But I wonder where you draw the line, before of after Romanticism, Impresionism, etc.
Because in some ways, comparing to the Art of just a few years later, even Van Gogh could almost be considered 'classical', isn't it? ;-) And that period is inmensely popular and has become mainstream.
Even Picasso, for example, but not Juan Gris or other artists of the same time but less famous...
It's also a question of trends I guess, a film wit Scarlett Johansson comes out and everybody goes see Rembrandt... ;-)

There is room for variations in taste. The works of the Renaissance Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Rafael Sanzio are as valid now as they were when first painted. If you visit the Louvre and the Musee de Orsay. you can see the range of classical art and the modern variations of Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne and Degas. A visit to the Pompidou Center, also in Paris will allow you to see Modern Art. My advice is to be open to different styles of art. You may learn to apprecfiate what the artist is attempting to say.

nothing in art truly dies because there are always people who appreciate art history and wish to work in styles reflecting artists they enjoy. I for one am not attracted to classical painting because of it direct replication of reality in most cases. I would rather visit a gallery with larger abstracted or simi abstracted figurative works because this is how i paint. People will always do what they like in art because its how artists work. Similar to music no one genre of music completely dies out although certain styles are popular in different periods of time. This is all reflective of environment, social and economical issues surrounding the times.

I completly understand where you are coming from.
I love more classical, Romanesque styles, but it does seem to be dying and replaced with Modern art.
I can appreciate the newer art for what it is, but it just can't compete with the old styles.
