Have children participate in activities that correspond to things children will do in other parts of the world. For example, we have a couple of children in our church who heard that children in a village in Africa will walk many kilometers carrying about 10 liters of water on their heads. This water represents all of the water they have to drink, wash, and cook with that day. It also represents a little more than the water used for the average toilet flush in North America. The girls is our church are walking the approximate distance that the African children would walk and will do so carrying approximately the same amount of water. They have asked people to sponsor them with the money going to clean water initiatives in Africa that our church partners with. Activities such as these open the eyes of our kids to the needs of those just like them in other parts of our world.

The United States is the greatest country because we have liberty to say and do anything we want. Especially to invent things and start our own companies without the government blocking our efforts. We have welcomed immigrants that come here legally with an understanding that new immigrants must work hard. We need to teach our children to be honest and instill in them a hard work ethic. We need to shield our children from those who would use public schools to indoctrinate them in "alternate lifestyles". We need to teach our children to love their country and resist the movement that blames the United States for all the world's problems, then, we can point out the problems that other children in the world have.

Also, when you see a show like the Oscars where actors give the impression that there is no higher honor in the world than to get a stupid statue for acting, what kind of impression does that leave? When the winners are standing up there stuttering and crying, it makes me sick. I always think about the heroic things our soldiers, firefighters, and hospital workers do on a daily basis. Those people should be getting awards for the examples they set. I'll bet if all the actors donated those pricey gift bags to UNICEF, they'd be able to help a lot of children.

We need to teach our kids to be more aware that there are other children all around the world. They may have things in common with these children, and yet there be major lifestyle differences. Our children should begin learning additional world languages very young, and a sense of geography instilled early on. I am aware that some college students in the US sometimes don't even have a clue what states are nearby, and don't have any sense that there could be other countries (this is very sad and discouraging). In teaching our kids about the children of the world, our kids will gain a better appreciation for life, and maybe countries and even religious groups will get along better together as adults and leaders of the future. We really need to get through to all children that we are a global community, and we just can't be locked into our little spot, our little place of safety. Safety is nice, but not if it means a person or community is so sheltered that they can't see beyond it.

We have a globe so were always talking about other parts of the world. I think it's essential to make the world a more accessible, smaller place, so our children grow to respect and care for our neighbors around the world. When our children grow to respect and have a kind attitude about the kids on the other side of the border and across the ocean, war with them is less an option when they are old enough to be leaders. Kids assume there are kids elsewhere. Show them there is a world of children out there and they will want to be their friend. The United States is the greatest country because we have liberty to say and do anything we want. We can read the kids stories - there are lots of multicultural books available now, as well as cookbooks, informational books, etc, for even young children. We can take them on virtual tours of other places through internest, film, and tv. There is no reason our kids should grow up relatively isolated from the children of the world.

Tell them that there are some people in this world who don't have enough to eat, and we want to help. Teach them to give to charity by setting an example: Have them help you pick a worthy charity, open your own wallet and take some money out, maybe even ask them for some money from their piggy bank, then total the amount and write a check. Have them participate in the process, and they will feel good about it. Lesson learned. Also, when you see a show like the Oscars where actors give the impression that there is no higher honor in the world than to get a stupid statue for acting, what kind of impression does that leave? You can not actually teach the kids about the world's children but they will learn as they grow. It is the most natural way for the kids to know the world and they shouldn't be taught the problems other childern's have under compulsion because if the kids are not able to get in touch with themselves they will never take others problems seriously. I think each their life experience and studying will make the kids consider what they can do in adulthood. I was taught by my parents that every child is socially vulnerable in any countries and I was told that I must work very hard on trying to understand whatever I face. Now I understand what my parents meant. Modest efforts from one's childhood can eventually actually help others.
