My wife and I are trying to choose a vacation destination that offers the chance to be active: hiking, sea kayaking, snorkeling or scuba intro. Later on we'd like to be pampered: sunning on the beach, great restaurants, resort/spa, maybe a casino, etc.

We don't mind if it takes two locations (fairly close together) to fit the bill. I do want to watch airfares... I'd rather spend the money on a fancier resort than on plane tickets.

I'm currently leaning toward Caribbean (Dominica and San Juan), but other Caribbean destinations or even Mexico or Hawaii might be good.

One more thing, icing on the cake: the chance to be alone together under a waterfall (wink, wink) would be nice bonus for our 15th Anniversary.

What would you recommend?

I would like to say in advance Welcome to my Country Of Dominica if The island is Your choice.
If you are coming from the united states and want to fly throu Dominica you can Take The American airlnes which would Take you to Peurto Rico where you would then catch the Americn Eagle which woudl lead you directly here in Dominica.(www.aa.com)u can book on this site and all.
When it comes to hiking and Sight Seeing Dominica is # 1.reasons being
that we have so many tall mountains with ancient trails- the highest at 4 747ft.We are the most mountainous of the windward islands and have the highest concentration of volcanic mountains per area in the world.
There are many one- of- a kind sites like the boiling lake right in the interior of the island in one of our National park which is a World heritage site.
In addition to the The boiling lake we also have sulpher springs and pools, fresh water lakes and uncountable waterflalls- this due to the 365 rivers and the very rugged terrain. Many of the waterfalls are very private and romantic (wink wink)lol.
We were awarded by the readers choice magazine 2007 as the 2nd best atlantic destination for scuba diving
We are also branded as the Whale watching capital of the Caribbean
There is on the island # of activities to do besides snorkelling/scuba divingand hiking-
There is river tubing and also and spending the day at our adventure park.
Atv and horse back riding
Soaking in one of our unique natural spas from the earth(our sulpher pools and springs)
Taking boat rides on our famous Indian river(which was one of teh sites they filmed pirates of the Caribbean) and aslo on our fresh water lakes.Kayaking services are provided and the websites i provide below will give u links to these services and much more.
Our beaches are not overcorwded seeing that we are not an overcommercialised tourist place and the reason being beacsue we dont have white sand beache however more and more tourists are begining to discover and love our black and honey-coloured beaches because they are clean small peaceful and private.
If you are loking for a PRIVATE hotel with pampering spas then we are the ideal. The island of Dominca Doesnt invest in big 5 star hotels but rather in small private ones nestled in the forests because the Island promotes Eco tourism. One of the resorts u can look at is the Jungle Bay Resort(all this u will find on the webistes i provide below)
i can go on and on but jsu view these websites and u will see that really The island of Dominica is What you are looking for

My wife and I had a great time at a cheap(inexpensive) inn at St. John (US Virgin Island- plane to Charlotte-Amelie St. Thomas, ferry to St. John). It cost $1 to ride to the other side of the island; you don't need to reent a car. My wife and I enjoyed a new sport sniking- hiking in to a beautiful beach and then picnicing then snorkeling. It was amazing and the whole coral reef around this gentle and slow island is a National Park!! Great place- iwant to keep exploring but I think we found the gem of the world. (By the way- I found your question by typing some key words into google; I am also looking for the same recommendation/endorsement). Try your local scuba shop.
