I am a working mother with 2 kids 7 and 3.5. I work 4 days a week from 9 to 5 at the moment and was wondering if I would be better off working 5 days 9 to 3. At the moment I am quite stressed and find coming home at 5.30, getting the kids, cooking dinner and bedtime quite stressful and I hardly see them! If I worked 9 to 3 over 5 days I would be back to pick them from school and nursery and have a bit more time although I would loose my day off on the Friday which is also quite nice.

What do other people think would be better? To have a full day off or to be home early 5 days per week?

How truly blessed you are to have this working option. I am also a working mother and would love to have more flexibility. I work the full week, 5 days, until 4:30 pm and I find that there is plenty of time to get everything done. The stress is still there to some extent but I also feel that being home for dinner is important. It is bad enough that it takes both parents to work to support a family now a days. The good thing is that there are some employers out there that truly understand and appreciate family values and in turn offer their employees the flexibility needed to raise a family now a days. I say - work the 5 days - 9 to 3 and spend the evenings with your family. I am sure you will enjoy it!!

God Bless and Good luck with the kids.

I am a working mother and although the full day off would be welcomed, Kids look for permanency. The fact that on your day off they are still at school or day care means you still do not have more time for them.

What you should do is work the shorter hours, you would be lessed stressed on a daily basis, spend a lot more cumulative hours with ur kids, and have at least an hour of so more for yourself each day.

Once every cuple of weeks you can have a babysitter, etc for a few hours to give urslf a break.

I have my son at work with me so it is fully 24hrs. I take a few hours off now and then and I mean just two hours or so because I feel guilty if I leave him too long.

SO I am not as stressed.

I was the same as what you describe and I opted to work 5 days 9 - 3. This means while my babe is in school, I am in work.....and I can take her and pick her up. Yes you do have to manage your time better in the house to get through cleaning, washing, cooking tea etc, but I find this works much better. You will develop a routine in the end and thoings will work out, good on you for being an independent woman!

I a mum of 3 and work full time 9-5 mon to Friday. I would love to finish at 3 and be home for the kids, you'd soon get bored of having a whole day off lol. spread your hours over the 5 days.

As a working parent I think it's important to have quality time with your children.
However, you have to make sure you can afford to stop working at 3.
Basically if you work 16 hours a week, you can qualify for working tax credit, so at least it's one thing.
But, there's no right and wrong, it's the way you feel, if you feel the need to spend more time with your children and can afford it, just do it.
People have different needs, and for some it's easier to afford them.x

I would take the home early option five days a week so you can get into a routine. I find that if you have a whole day off you tend to get nothing done because you're so tired.

I think you should spend as much time as you can with your kids, so home early 5 days a week. Also I think you will find you have more time for yourself, you get more things done around the house, and still have time to spend with your children. Happy New Year.

I think that you should work 9 to 3 over the 5 days. Because, you still have the weekend.

Personally, id do the 5 days and be home earlier, at least then you can get them from school, never mind the friday off. I think you would be less stressed, you would have more time before bedtime and you wouldnt be rushing with the dinner. You obviously have weekends off.
