It depends upon how fast your hair grows...that will dictate how often you need to do something.

After getting the perm., use conditioner regularly. After it grows out a little, get a trim (this is usually the best time of the permed hair). The cut will bounce it right back.

Next, after it grows some more, get just the roots repermed. The rest doesn't need it and it is better for your hair. Also, get a trim again.

Remember to keep conditioning it. Should last 3-4 months, depending on your hair growth.

Tip: Perm your hair 1st and have it cut last...it cuts off any friz

just keep good maintinance... keep your hair well moisturized. Use a shampoo and conditioner designed for curls, and dont shampoo every day.. that dries out your hair. Some people have said it helps to sleep with a silk scarf on, and use silk pillowcases to prevent pulling and rubbing on the pillow. Never use a brush on it.. just a wide tooth comb to get out tangles. Silicone shine enhancer (like john freida frizz ease) will make your curls soft and shiny!! A good perm will last 3 months if you take good care of it.

If your a woman of color and had your hair relaxed, then you need to add moisture to your hair. Limit your use of heated hair appliance, they tend to dry out your hair, don't over comb and brush your hair, this will cause your hair to stretch and break off. Add a oil sheen to your hair or a hair dressing and apply it to your hair and scalp at least two times a week.
