Tanning accelerators with the moisturizing ingredient "hemp" create a darker and longer-lasting tan. I work at a tanning salon, and I absolutely love the accelerators by Australian Gold. My all-time favorite by Australian Gold is Almost Famous (triple bronzer with hemp) which gets me the darkest and smells the best, and it runs around $35-40/bottle but is worth the purchase. Sun Dreams (4th dimension bronzer with hemp) is also excellent, and Bearly Legal (bronzing + hemp) works just as well but is a little cheaper than the previous two. All three smell great and in my opinion don't leave that funny after-tan funk (especially Almost Famous!). Your tanning salon may sell these in single-use packettes so you don't have to splurge on a bottle of the stuff.

Also, avoid products with "tingle" if you can! While tanning, your skin will feel like it's burning (customers have told me) and your skin will be red for about 45 minutes after your tanning session. The tingle effect is from blood rushing to the skin's surface, which warms the skin to make you tan quicker. Some people don't mind it though and it seems to work.

Banana Boat makes this stuff that comes out almost looking like a really dark oak wood stain. It IS oil based and doesn't smell at all. If you rub it in well right before you tan it'll help darken you more quite well.

I like malibu hemp or panama jack. Please stay away from products containing mineral oil (very bad for your skin). Also keep your skin moisturized. That will help maintain your tan. You can get malibu hemp at wal-mart about $5 (unless its a seasonal item). I get the Panama Jack from dollar general I think $2.50?? By the way, if you don't live in a warm climate, it looks ridiculous to be too dark in the winter. Once a week should be good.

Bad, but so good too.
I have tanned off and on for about 8 yrs. now.
I alternate between baby oil and regular body lotions.

my friend is a tan-aholic... she works at a tanning salong. yes, your right.. its bad. very bad. but, if you insist on doing it and exposing yourself to cancer causing rays..... banana boat tanning oil is the best "cheap" brand according to her.
