I have 3 tats and I'm a paleskined italian/russian with blonde hair and I'm definetly not in a gang. But parents often think that tats are disgusting, vile, or gang signs. when my mom found out i had tats she told me it was disugsting and vulgar that I would defile my body like that. parents will usually have a negative reaction unless they are a little bit younger. So

I think it all depends what you get inked on you.
I have a treble cleff (music note) on my wrist. It's very personal and has nothing to do with a gang.
So unless you're getting KKK tattooe'd on your *** I wouldn't call it something gangs do.
how old are you? I'm 19 and got mine when I was 18, which was the legal age to get one in Canada. Under 18 you need a parents r consent or an older siblings.
my best advice is that a tattoo is forever, don't go getting some retarded butterfly on your back that is "cute", that's just stupid.
get something that when you're 80 years old and your grandchildren see it and ask you wont be stucking saying "I was young and it was cute at the time" or something else lame like that.
I took months to figure out if I should get my tatt or not, and in the end it had enough meaning to me that I got it.

In Africa, many tribes tattoo as part of the initiation (puberty) rites. In others, the tattoo is a sign of beauty, and can also reflect the family's wealth or standing.
In many places in Micronesia, and in the Pacific generally, many tribes have ceremonial tattoos - some are decorative - some reflect status within the society, others are related to past achievements.
I know priests with tattoos, as well as doctors, engineers and many in the military.
Sorry, Dad - while it is certainly true that many in gangs have tattoos, and some gangs (like the Japanese crime families) use their special designs as a form of identification, most tattoos in the world have nothing to do with gangs.
It is still the case,by the way, that if you have a tattoo, you will not be allowed to donate blood.

In some cities and towns, a few people who have tattoos ARE in gangs. Sometimes the women in these gangs have many large tattoos. This doesn't mean that you are or will ever be. I think your dad may be having issues with this because of what he has seen and perhaps heard of from his friends and work associates.

Well, a lot of people can view tattoos that way. Maybe he thinks this because of the nature of the tattoos or just for having them.
It doesn't mean you are in a gang at all.
I was in the Army and had several tattoos, but I would only get one if I drew it or it had meant something to me.
My parents didn't like it when I got my first one.
I am a mother now and I don't want them anymore.
When I look at people I do not assme they are in a gang for their tattoos, rather I look at them and wonder why they have each tattoo and do any of them actually have meaning or was it just for the look..?

I guess it would depend on what kind of tat you got. I am sure some tats do represent gangs. I have 5 tat's none are for gangs. I think if you want a tat just make sure it is not a gang sign if you dont want a gang sign and you should be fine. Your dad is probably just trying to scare you into not getting one.
good luck

No it does not mean you are in a gang. I am not in a gang and have one. The only reason I got it was for self expression. If you really want one you can wait until you are 18 and get it in a place where your parents won't see it.

Back in your fathers day tattoo's probably meant one of two or three things either you were in a gang, served time in jail or were in the military.
In today's society tattoo are about as common as baseball caps. Everyone has not just one but complete body pieces. From full sleeves to murals on their backs.
If I were you and needed to calm your father down either turn on the T.V. to one of the many tattoo shows or maybe go get a tattoo magazine.
My first tattoo my father told me that it wasn't my body to tattoo in the first place so I know how you feel.
GOOD LUCK!!

I have 7 tattoos, and unless there is a gang for fat white guys who like to sit on their couches and watch sports then I'm in no gang either.

Sounds like he might be old school!
No not all tatts are gang related. Some are though.
Even if they are not meant to be gang related, some people and some cops might think they are.
