We'll be out of town for 11 days. A friend is coming over every-other-day to feed the cats, change the litter box, and check the mail.
I would like to pay her for help. What is the going rate for this type of service??

$10 a day seems pretty fair. If the sitter has to travel or go out of their way to do it you many want to factor that in.

I live in South Carolina and just paid $15.00 per time the cat sitter came. I had her come every other day and it was well worth it. I have had friends come over in the past and I brought them a really nice gift from when I had been. I do think you should decide on something before you leave so there won't be any hard feeling or take the chance you could lose a friend.

We have 5 cats (and dogs). We pay a pet sitter $15 per visit. She scoops the litter box, gives food and fresh water to our cats. If it's summertime and the cats can go outside in the yard, she will come in the mornings and let them out and return before sundown and let them back in.

When I pet sit for friends I usually charge them $5 a visit. To cover my gas expenses for going over there once a day.

I give them fresh water, feed them and will play with them and give them some attention. I'm usually there about 1/2 hour.

Wow, I totally want to be a pet-sitter now after reading the answers. :) A lot depends on how far she'll drive. If my neighbor asked me to do that I wouldn't accept any money at all. if I had to drive across town then I would. Anywhere from 20.00 to 50.00 is probably fair depending on the circumstances. Cats are, of course, much easier to care for than dogs. If it feels like you're shelling out a lot, I can tell you that when I worked at a kennel we charged 10 bucks a night per cat for your kitty to sit in a tiny box all day. Maybe instead of cash get her a nice gift certificate to a restaurant or store she would like...

I do this type of thing from time to time, and for what you are describing, assuming they needn't buy the litter or food, around 50-60 dollars is appropriate.

If she comes over every other day, that would be five days.
Assuming she is at your home for an hour, that would be 5 hours.
5 dollars a pet is around going rate, and you have two.

Hope I helped!

When I watch my neighbor's cats, she pays me $5/day and I go over there every day. It's fairly cheap for her, and not much work but a little extra cash for me.
Pay her $5/day for each day she comes over there...so if she comes over on odd days, that would be $30 for you. If she comes over on even days, that would be $25. If she has to travel more than a few houses down, consider giving a few more dollars for that.

Maybe around 20 or 30 $ or less..i wouldn't go to much over that range..I mean their only taking care of the cats for what...around 5 or 6 days...so thats probably a good range.

My husband charges $15.00 a day for watching pets/houses for friends of his. They pay it gladly. They have a cat and two ferrets. They aren't that far away from his work, so it's not inconvenient for him to go over there. If there is a bit of traveling involved, I'm sure he'd charge a bit more.

If she's a friend, she really shouldn't be charging you. Would you charge her to do her a favor??

Just out of courtesy you should give her something to cover her gas/transit costs to get to your place, as well as money for cat food/litter, and then bring her back a nice gift from wherever you're going.
