Start with walking to get you back in the groove...a brisk walk burns calories but is kinder to your joints than jogging or other 'impact' activites...
Add in some swimming, jogging (if you like), weight lifting, etc...whatever you can do based on if you want to workout at home or a gym, and what kinds of workout equipment you have available or if you want to do it on your own w/o special equipment.

Walking is probably your best bet to start with. Aim for at least a 20 minute walk a day at a pace that gets your heart rate up. If 20 is too much, start with what you can, and slowly add time. Light weight lifting will help improve your muscle and bone strength. As a cheap alternative to the gym or buying weights, you can use canned veggies or bottles of water as weights. Try to do your cardio (walking) at least 3-4 times a week, and you can do the light weight lifting on the days in between. Be sure you allow your body a day or two for rest. Also, don't push yourself over your limit as that can result in injuries.

I agree with everyone else, walking is one of the best options for starting an exercise program. I use walking regularly as part of my exercise program. It decreases cholesterol, decreases stress, improves mood, you'll lose weight, tone muscles and the list goes on and on. A lot of people find using a pedometer a great motivational tool for walking. Community support also helps.

Walking 30 minutes a day will help get your body used to being physically active again. Once you're used to that, kick it up a notch to 60 minutes, then incorporate a light jog, in intervals. You can also try a gym class. They're fun and you can find a low-impact strength class that'll get you into shape, like boxing, which will help you build muscle and also help with agility.
