Can some one please tell me why my dog ate her litter. eve Is a chow mixed with a pitt and she is two years old a stray dog got into our back yard about three months ago he looked sick and was a mutt, we caught them stuck backwards and ran the stray off one morning. december 28 2006 eve had seven litter they looked very little but by this being her first time we did not know what to do so we put blankets in her house and she went into the house and had the rest of her litter i think it took her a whole day to have them all she did not have them at once. we check on them three times a day, January 2, 2007 we get up to check on them they are gone no sight of the puppies.

.Certified Vet Tech here .This could be quite possible . dogs by nature eat there young . if the puppies were sick she more then likely ate them . or she could have moved them into a hiding place. watch her and listen for puppy cries . but if you notice she not looking for her puppies then she more then likely had a sickly batch

OK, she may have just moved the puppies. She may have felt threatened in some way and wanted to protect her puppies. Carefully check around the entire yard. Look in dark quiet areas, like under bushes or in a hole she may have dug.

It is unlikely that she would have eaten them. Usually when the puppies are ill, she will suffocate them, or separate the ill puppy from the rest of the litter.

When you find the puppies, leave them alone for the next week or so. Once the get to be about 2 weeks old, you can start handling them slightly. This is the time that you will need to worm them for the first time.

Once you find them, please e-mail me and I can walk you through the steps you need to take to make sure the puppies are their healthiest. Good Luck!

Wow -- don't even know where to begin.

Do you know she ate them? If a stray can get into your yard, what else can? If she felt threatened, perhaps she moved them. Because you insisted on leaving her and her litter unattended, OUTSIDE in a dog house, any number of things could have happened. She could have killed them due to stress. Something else could have killed them. They could be under your house.

Be a responsible pet owner and look for them. If you can find them, bring she and the litter INTO THE HOUSE where they will be safe.

Regardless of whether or not you find them, please have your dog SPAYED as soon as possible. Clearly you have no interest in properly caring for the puppies, so do your part to ensure that she doesn't have more.

Your dog and her puppies are OUTSIDE? What's wrong with you? Why aren't these animals indoors where it's warm? Why haven't you seen a vet if the animals looked small? Why would it take all day for the b*tch to birth her litter? You need to take the b*tch and the litter to the vet. You also need to learn about responsible pet ownership. Your b*tch should not have been outdoors unattended when she was in heat.

Do us all a favor and have her fixed before this happens again - and it will.

She either hid them, or if they were sick when born her instinct is to get rid of them {Bury them} So you might want to walk around your yard and check for unusual..Possible holes in the yard...I had a Rottie, her first litter was in a storm and we weren't home, our yard was flooding and she freaked out and started to bury them cause she thought they were all going to die, basic instincts of a dog...Thank god we got home in time, we were able to save all but one...

she could have moved them... check around your house, around the outside of the house, somewhere that it might be a little warmer and more secluded... if you still can't find them then I would check her feces after she goes to the bathroom... I have heard of dogs killing their litters but not actually eating them... good luck... hope you find them.

she may have put them in a place that she thinks is more secure and safe for them to stay because that is there natural instinct. But she could possibly have ate them i know this sounds disgusting but check her poop and you could possibly find out if she ate them but i think you should get her spayed asap as it could happen again.

She may have moved them. Check all around. Watch her to see where she goes. I hope the pups are okay. Sometimes a mom will eat them if they are born sick or born too soon.

Either that (eew), or she moved them to hide them in a more comfortable/private spot. Watch her to see where she goes during the day. Hopefully she'll lead you to them!
