I'm 5'9 and around 115-117 pounds. I am healthy, there's nothing I banish from my diet, I like my body, but I know I am underweight and a few friends have expressed concern. I used to have an eating disorder but I really don't think there is anything psychological going on as I am otherwise quite happy.

Can anyone with a medical opinion tell me if it really matters if I'm a bit skinny?

I forgot to mention, the thing that sparked my concern about this was trying out a friend's body fat scales recently (I don't own my own scales), and my percentage of body fat ranged between 12-13.5% ... from what I have looked up that isn't good!

I'm underweight also. You must read "Dr. David Reuben's Quick Weight-Gain Program". In the first few chapters he makes an excellent argument that being underweight is a health hazard. This book changed the way I think about my eating habits. There are various causes of underweight, including hyper-thyroid condition. After seeing a physician first, I started to follow the book's recommendations and gained about 13 pounds in just two weeks! With the extra weight on I felt healthier and had more energy. Find the book at a public library and read the first few chapters. It's worth the consideration. Good luck.

I am 5'9 and go between 117 to 120 and am 46 years old and have six children, five grand babies. I have never weighted over 140 and that was nine months preg. and the weight would fall off as soon as my child was born. With all six kids I came home from Hospital looking like I had not had a child and was proud of it. I know mothers with two or three kids that wish they had my body, when they ask how I keep my shape I tell them I don't know how anyone with two or more children can hold onto weight if they are a truly active Mom in their children's lives. If your happy with your self tell others to concentrate on their own bodies and leave you alone on yours. Not everyone has the same metabolisms, or body, god how boring the world would be if we were all the same shape. If your happy and healthy the way you are be happy and be proud, don't let others dictate how they think you should look!

as long as your body is getting the nutrients it needs, then you should be fine. but why do you want to be noticeably skinny? maybe gain 5-7lbs....you'd probably feel better and people would stop talking about you.

as long as you are healthy, ie getting your period (this is a sign that your body has enough fat and nutrients) then you should be fine, some people are just like that!

it doesnt matter you are underweight as long as you give all nutritions to your body such as all protein and carbs and vegeies and fruits.
