I have a 9 year old amstaff and he eats a cup of food three times a day. He holds a steady 50 pounds. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. My dog is about 8 pounds at 8 months old and she shouldn't get much bigger than that. She eats about a 1/4 of a cup of food twice a day-breakfast and dinner. It probably takes her a month and a half--two months to finish a 8 pound bag of food. The bag is under 10 dollars. But it all depends on what kind of dog you get and the age of the dog. You also have to think about all the other costs involved in getting a dog. There is the food, toys, crates/pens/kennels, leashes and collars, bowls, vet bills, and grooming. Getting a dog, especially a puppy can get very expensive. Just take this into consideration before you go off to get a dog. Also the dog needs a lot of playing time and your attention. Hope this helps.

We go through a 40 pound bag in about a week and a half, but, that's for four dogs. One large breed, two medium sized, and a toy breed.
When my beagle was on a different food, (Lite dog food, she put on a little too much weight) She went through a 20 pound bag in 2 to 3 weeks.
If you get a puppy, you can estimate $1000 for the first year, for veterinary care, food, etc. A bit less for an adult dog.

It would depend entirely on what you are prepared to pay and what suits the dog in question..
Usually the breeder will tell you what they have been previously fed on and they know their breed best so will know what suits their line...
You can buy a basic mixer and add meat to it which is relatively cheap enough to do and often better quality than your top of the range supermarket brands..
Mine are fed on mixer and fresh tripe as many other people in my chosen breed feed and they all have fantastic coats and coverage..
