Hi slim27, Mark is right! Since you have no control over the aircraft, you get a lot of anxiety. If you learn how the airplane works like me ( i'm a pilot & an air traffic controller) you will have a different perspective about flying. Remember that pilots have MANY THOUSANDS of flying hours in the exact aircraft that you are flying. There is not only one but TWO pilots on board. Also flight attendants know a lot about safety procedures on board. Aircrafts get checked by mechanics each time by certain procedures by the FAA and also Pilots check their planes before flying. Also Air traffic controllers are doing a great job, especially in the US (which is the most efficient Air traffic control system in the world!) and they make sure that there won't be any crashes between aircraft and they give a safe route for your aircraft. Don't be afraid of turbulence because they won't get into really bad weather, and the turbulence you feel is produced by a silly cloud and the wings can support a LOT of turbulence, they are very flexible.
As you can see you have nothing to worry about an your anxiety is supported by an illogical reason, so try to look for logic reasons and you will be able to control your anxiety to a point were you can feel safe flying in an aircraft. Good luck!

Can you reason with yourself? Flying is by far the safest way to travel. You're far more likely to be involved in a car wreck while traveling to the airport than be involved in a plane wreck. I used to hate to fly and I'd remind myself that of that fact quite often to try to calm my anxiety. The other thing that really helped me was that I ended up in a situation where I had to fly a lot over a period of a year of so. After that I wasn't afraid anymore. I think a lot of my fear came from the unexpected noises and bumps of the aircraft. I was always thinking 'somethings wrong!' Once I flew quite a bit in a short period of time I got used to it and now I can sit back and enjoy. If all else fails, ask your doc if you can have a couple of valium--one for the trip out and one for the trip back!

I'm an airline pilot and a flight instructor, and I can tell you that your fear is really about a loss of control, not about flying. You have no control or understanding of what is going on behind that cockpit door and that is what bothers you. My advice is to either take a fear of flying class or actually take a few flying lessons yourself. This will teach you what is going on and it will cure your fears. Logically you know that flying is the safest form of travel by far, but that doesn't solve the control issues. Once you learn about it, your fear will cease. I've seen it happen many, many times.

Just before you are ready to fly, try to remember that flying is safer than driving a car!
You are more likely to have a car accident than if you fly.
You should also try to get to your doctor and ask him or her if there are any mild sedatives or herba you can use.
When you are on the plane, it's best to pass the time by playing with your kid and or listening to music. Watch the movie (if they have one). Do something to keep your mind off the fact that you are flying!
Finally, you might want to call the airline you are flying on. Ask them if they have any programs for nervous flyers. I put a lonk to a website that helps with the fear of flying.
Good luck! See you in the wild blue yonder!

My wife take GINGER pills, this really helps her. What you should prob. do is make sure when you fly you have something to do to keep you occupied. Books, movies, knitting...lol, anything will help divert your mind to another obstacle.
good luck.
